Have you tried another PDF reader such as Foxit or (my new favourite) PDF-Xchange Viewer Document? Or could the copy of Office be an old one that doesn't support .docx? IIRC he freebie Kingsoft Office Suite will handle all Word documents new and old. Possibly worth looking at.

Just downloaded Foxit as you suggested Blueboxer, made sure it was set as the default reader, and am still unable to get a PDF file in an email in my inbox.
Thanks for trying...Thai

Hi Thai,
Is this web mail? Do you open your browser to the Yahoo site to read your mail on a web page? If so, then this may be a setting in your browser that is causing the problem. If it is a browser you are trying to download the files through, then which browser and what version?
If you use a browser to view the emails, can you open the attachments (not download, just open and view)?

Hi Thai,
I have researched this problem and it appears to be a problem with that version of Firefox. Some users report that running FF in safe mode allows the attachments to download. Other fixes involve clearing the cache, cookies, and history helps, while other say creating a new bookmark to the site helps. Almost all state that trying to download with other browsers such as IE, Chrome, Opera, etc. works and the problem is only with FF.
Using another browser to download your mail seems to be the best fix now until FF has a newer version that corrects this problem.

Dana...OMG I am so grateful for your research!!
I first tried using IE and it worked! I then created a new bookmark in FF and that worked too!
I can't thank you enough for solving this for me. I thought I had searched this topic every which way from Sunday, but apparently I didn't go to the correct places or use the right words or something...at any rate, again my thanks.
THIS is why I come here every day...to learn and take advantage of the knowledge that always bails me out of these issues...Thai

one was a pdf and the other a docx. Gosh I hate being so stupid, but what software do I need? Hi, just wanna say that I know exactly how you feel, when I was a newbie I always hated that I didn't know some seemingly simple stuff.

You can try un-tick "hide extensions for known file types" under Folder Options, I find that pretty useful. Also, I'm using a document viewer to read my PDF and docx files, xlsx is not supported but I don't use it that much anyhow.

First of all, welcome Catherine to our Board! It is great to have you with us and we will look forward to hearing from you! As to your comment about being once being a newbie and feeling stupid, I remember that feeling as well. It is so true that there is no such thing as a stupid question. I know, because I asked all of them. Again, Welcome!

I have been fiddling with PC's since early windows 98 went all the way to win. 8 and back to 7.Most of the time I feel like a newbie,as there is always something I don't know.Worse of all is that its always seems to be the stuff that everybody has known for years. This is the reason I like this forum. You learn from everybody, and everyone here tries to help. Keep coming back.

Catherine,
Yes i did get the issue resolved, by creating a new bookmark in FF. So simple but at the time the problem seemed so big and complicated.
Welcome aboard to an absolutely wonderful forum, as you will find out in short order...Thai

I use Thunderbird as my mail client and it is usually well behaved. However I have a friend who is addicted to Apple mobile devices and at least one of them sends messages with attachments that will not open, or indeed respond to a click in any way. There are other Apple products that produce no-hassle attachments so so we've just agreed he'll use those for the purpose.
