Increase Network Speed
Purpose:
Increase network speed by increasing the amount of data your PC can receive simultaneously.
Overview:
Windows 10, by default, limits the amount of data the PC receives simultaneously from the network. This “amount of data received simultaneously” can be considered the amount of data it consumes in one “bite”. If the "bites" are adjusted to take bigger bites in the same time frame, then the data can be consumed faster, which relates to a faster download. The default value that limits the “bite size” can be changed by a registry key and significantly increase your network’s speed. The instructions below explain how this will help and how to add this key to increase your “bite size”.
Special Note:
This was written for Windows 10, but may work for other versions of Windows. Your current download speed must be > 10Mps to see any benefits from this tip.
Quick Take:
* Open Registry Editor and go to the following key:
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters
* Add New DWORD (32-bit) Value key named IRPStackSize with a Hexadecimal value of 20 (or a Decimal value of 32).
* Reboot to take effect.
Detailed Instructions:
Windows receives data from the network in small packets and limits the number of packets amount of data) received. This setting is called I/O Request Packet Stack Size (IRPStackSize) and is set to 15 (decimal value) by default. This works well when download speeds from the network are 10Mps or lower, but when connected to networks with download speeds > 10Mps this setting is preventing max performance from your network and you’re not getting your money’s worth for your high speed connection. Testing has shown that there is a stability problem (losing packets) when setting the number of packets above 33; but, 32 seems to be the ideal setting for those networks with download speeds > 10Mps.
The only way to change this setting is thru the Registry, but Microsoft did not include this key in the default registry; so, you have to add the key in order to adjust this setting.
Adding keys in the Registry scares a lot of users and this fear mainly comes being in the wrong place in the Registry when you take suggested action. The Registry is big and the key names are long and complex, so it easy to wind up in the wrong branch or even if you have the right branch mistype the suggested entry. Users avoid tips like this because of that fear of damaging the Registry. The following method avoids those problems and fears by turning the process into a simple copy, paste, save, and merge action with very little problems.
* Open Notepad (not Word or WordPad). Win key + R to open Run box and enter Notepad.exe.
* Copy the bold text below without any extra spaces or lines:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters]
"IRPStackSize"=dword:00000020
* Paste into the blank Notepad document so that the first line (Windows registry…) is on the first line and all the way to the left margin.
* Select File > Save As to open the Save As window and in that window:
• Select a location to save the file to.
• In the Save as type: box, click the dropdown arrow to the right and select All Files (*)
• In the File name: box enter IRPStackSize.reg. Be sure to include the .reg in the file name.
• Press the Save button.
* Go to where you save this IRPStackSize.reg. Right click the file and select Merge. An UAC box will open asking to open the Registry Editor which you click Yes to. Windows will also issue warning statements about changing the Registry which you confirm that you do want to add this key. Windows will add the key and confirm that the key has been added.
* You must reboot to see the effects of your changes. Once you reboot, check out the web sites that you normally visit and notice how much quicker that occurs.
Comments:
Users with slow connections are always looking for ways speed it up. This will not help with a slow connection, it will only help with high speed connections.
