Some users want to be sure that if their phone is stolen, the information on that phone is not accessible. While there cannot be 100% assurance, iPhone’s do have a setting that greatly increases the odds that the information will not be accessible. If you enter the wrong passcode for the phone and the phone rejects your entry, it is called and counted as a failed attempt. For the first 5 failed attempts in a row, the phone lets you retry immediately. The 6th failed attempt causes a wait period before the next attempt can be made. The wait period increases with each following failed attempts. After 10 failed attempts the phone will lock you out. The wait periods added together means that it will take over 3 hours to enter 10 failed attempts in a row and lock the phone. Thus, a child or mischievous individual would have to be really dedicated to cause your phone to lock up by randomly entering passcodes. Even with the phone locked, there are ways to unlock the phone and get the information stored on the phone if the data has not been erased.
Set iPhone to Erase Data After 10 Failed Attempts
• Select Settings from the Home Screen.
• Scroll down and select Touch ID & Passcode. You will need to enter your passcode to access the Touch ID & Passcode settings.
• Scroll down the Touch ID & Passcode settings page to the bottom.
• The last setting on that page is Erase Data.
• Slide the switch to the right of Erase Data to turn this function on and have your data erased after 10 failed attempts in a row. The switch will turn green when on. When you turn this function on you will be asked to confirm the setting by pressing Enable.

This erase data function is very nice and provides extra security of your data. This function is even used to clean the phone before selling or giving it away for someone else to use. While it does erase all the data, there are ways to recover information that has been deleted from the iPhone (not widely available).
