iPhone – Filter Unknown Senders
Overview:
Similar to the iPhone’s Silence Unknown Callers function, the iPhone has the Filter Unknown Senders function to help fight message(text) spamming. This function will silence messages from unknown senders. This means you don’t have to stop what you are doing to check the new incoming message when it is someone you don’t know (spam). Following are instructions how to turn this function on, what happens with the filtering turned On, and how to use this function.
iPhone Filter Unknown Senders
How to Turn On/Off Filter Unknown Senders Function
• From Home Screen press the Settings button
• Scroll down the Settings screen and tap Messages
• Scroll down the Messages screen to Filter Unknown Senders
• Slide the switch to the right of Filter Unknown Senders to turn this function On. The switch background is green when the switch is turned On.
What Happens with Filter Unknown Senders Turned On?
• When you turn Filter Unknown Senders On, the Messages app will divide all messages (the ones already on the phone and any new incoming messages) into two groups called Known Senders and Unknown Senders. A new opening page to the Messages presents the Groups for you to select which Group of messages you want to view.
• The messages are separated into the two groups based upon the phone numbers in the phone’s Contacts (address book) app. A message’s sender (phone number the text came from) is considered Known if that phone number is in your Contacts, and is considered Unknown if that phone number is not in your Contacts.
• All messages, including those from unknown senders, will be in the Messages app until you delete or move the message. This setting does not delete messages nor does it prevent you from viewing any message.
• Incoming messages from Unknown senders will not trigger an incoming message notification on your phone (i.e., sound you have selected to notify you of a new incoming message), but will silently add the message to the Unknown Senders group.
• When you press the Messages button to open your Messages, the new page allowing you to select the group of messages you want to view has these choices:
o All Messages – listing all the messages as chronologically received, same listing you would see with this function turned Off.
o Known Senders – listing all the messages where the sender’s phone number is in the phone’s Contacts.
o Unknown Senders – listing all the messages where the sender’s phone number is not in the phone’s Contacts.
• Select the group by tapping that title.
• All functions you have had for a message will still apply to all the messages, including the Unknown Senders group.
How To Use the Filter Unknown Senders Function?
• The biggest concern in using the Filter Unknown Senders function is missing an important message. Really, it is missing an important message from a sender that is not in your list of contacts on the phone.
• There are sometimes when an important message will come from a sender that is not in your Contacts, such as a sent security code some web sites require for the login process. Usually in these situations you will be expecting the message so you can open the messages to view the Unknown Senders messages and when it is received, it will add to the list and you can view the message as soon as it comes in.
• All this setting does is separate the messages into two groups and only notify you of an incoming message if the sender is someone you know and is in your Contacts on the phone.
• To make use of this message spam fighting function (which is increasing) and not miss an important message you should:
o Make sure all people and businesses that you sent/receive messages from are in your Contacts on the phone.
o Check the Unknown Senders messages when you are expecting a message from a new unknown sender to catch that message when it comes in.
o Check the Unknown Senders messages on a regular basis (like daily or every other day) to see if there is an important message for you. Don’t expect much, the only important messages I found in the Unknown Senders list are the ones I expected and was looking for.
• This is what I do:
o I delete (&/or block) or add to my Contacts every message in the Unknown Senders group, making this list empty and handle new messages placed in this group in similar manner.
o If the message is spam, I block the sender and delete the message.
o If the message is a security code for the login process to one of my web sites, I delete it. Note: Do not keep texted security codes for login purposes once the login process is complete. You can’t use it again and if your phone is hacked you just gave the hacker the exact number and pattern of the site’s security codes.
o If the message is from someone or business that I plan to have future messages with, I add them to my contacts.
• To help complete the process…instructions for how to block the sender of a message, how to delete a message, and how to add the sender of a message to your Contacts follow.
How to Block the sender of a message
• With the message open, tap the sender icon at the top of the page.
• From the list that drops down press the info button (i in a circle).
• From the sender’s page that opens, tap the blue info button.
• From the page that opens, scroll down and tap Block this Caller and tap to confirm the block.
How to Delete a message
• Open the Message app or if already opened return to the Message app main page.
• Select the group of the message you wish to delete.
• From the list of that group’s messages, tap the more button (three dots in a circle) to show the dropdown list of more options. Tap Select Messages from the list.
• This will place checkmark circles to the left of each message. Tapping the circle will select the message (or messages) that whatever action taken will be on the selected messages. A selected message will have a checkmark in the circle.
• After selecting the message(s), tap the Delete button (the word Delete) at the bottom of the screen and the message(s) is(are) deleted.
How to add the sender of a message to your Contacts
• With the message open, tap the sender icon at the top of the page.
• From the list that drops down press the info button (i in a circle).
• From the sender’s page that opens, tap the blue info button.
• From the page that opens, scroll down and tap Create New Contact
• Enter the name you want for this sender and press Done when finished.
• You could also add this phone number to a contact that you already have by tapping the Add to Existing Contact option.
All things considered, checking my messages ever so often is better than being interrupted by someone that only wants to take from me.
