iPhone – New App Library
Overview:
The iPhone update to iOS14 added a new feature called the App Library. This is not the Apple Store library to get new apps. This is a library of the apps you have on your phone and like all libraries it organizes all your apps into categories. This new App Library does more than just organize your apps. You can remove app icons from the home screens, but still have access to those apps via the App Library (aka: hide the home screen app icons). The following instructions are how to utilize this new function.
Note: Your phone must be updated to iOS14.0 or above. Go to Settings>General>Software Update to see the current iOS your phone has.
iPhone App Library
How to access the App Library
From the Home Screen page, swipe from right to left to show the second page of the Home Screen. Repeat the swiping until you get to the last page of your Home Screens. From the last page of your Home Screens swipe from right to left to display the App Library. To close the App Library, swipe from left to right.
App Library Layout & Function
The App Library shows the icons for all apps installed on that phone divided into categories. The categories are labeled and all the apps on the phone that fit that category are in that category’s bubble. Apple determines what category an app is placed in, so you can’t move an app icon to a different category or arrange the order of the categories.
The icons in the bubble of a category are large or small, based upon the number of icons for apps that fit that category. The difference in size makes a slight difference in use.
Pressing a large icon opens that app.
Pressing a small icon enlarges that category’s bubble and all the icons in that category are large and will open its app when pressed.
Press the search bar at the top of the screen to search for the app by name. This search function also provides an alphabetical list of all apps on the phone.
Use the App Library to Customize Home Screen
The main purpose of the App Library is to organize the apps installed on your phone. Some users have several pages of Home Screens due to the many apps installed on their phone. The App Library allows you to remove icons from the Home Screen pages, and still have the apps accessible thru the App Library. You can remove the icons of the apps that you rarely use from the Home Screens, thus leaving nothing on the Home Screens but icons of apps that you use often. This makes finding the icon for often used apps easier and quicker. The following instructions explain how to remove an app icon from the Home Screen.
How to Remove an App Icon from the Home Screen
• For the app you want to remove, press and hold down on the icon until a pop-up menu appears.
• Select Remove App from the menu and this will cause a second pop-up menu to appear.
• Select Remove from Home Screen (on some versions select Move to App Library).
• The app’s icon will disappear from the Home Screen. If you look in the App Library you will find that app’s icon there that can be pressed to open that app.
How to Restore an App Icon to the Home Screen
• Locate the app’s icon in the App Library.
• Press and hold the icon until a pop-up menu appears.
• Select Add to Home Screen.
• The app’s icon will immediately appear on the Home Screen.
