iPhone – Silence Unknown Callers
Overview:
All phone users are sick of unsolicited phone calls from telemarketers and scam artists. There has been much talk of requiring carriers to filter these calls out, but as of now good spam calls filtering cost extra. For me, it is a matter of principle… I refuse to spend any money with anything connected to these calls either buying their products, answering their questions, or buying filtering to stop their calls (ransom money). I agree that it is annoying to stop what you are doing to check the ringing phone to see if it is someone you recognize and wish to talk to only to find it is another unknown caller. You can stop that annoyance without spending extra money. iPhones with iOS 13.0 and above have the feature Silence Unknown Callers. What follows is how it works (what calls will be silenced) and how to turn this feature on.
iPhone Silence Unknown Callers Function
The iPhone Silence Unknown Callers function does what its name indicates. Any incoming phone call that is “unknown” to the phone’s data base, will not ring. The phone call and its number will be listed in the Recent Calls list, and the caller has the option to leave a voicemail.
An obvious concern in using this function is missing calls from people you want to talk to. Each user has to decide if this is good for their situation. Understanding what calls are “known” and will ring will help make your decision.
The iPhone considers the following phone numbers as “known” and will ring on incoming calls:
• Phone numbers listed in your contacts.
• Any phone number that you have called, even if you did not save it as a contact.
• Any phone number that you have texted.
• Any phone number in an email opened on the phone.
• Any phone number presented as Siri suggestions.
Basically, any phone number that the phone has seen as a phone number is a "known" phone number.
For my situation, I can’t think of any phone call that I would want to answer when I have never had any contact with that phone number before (personal or business). If does happen and I don’t answer, then if it is important they will leave a voicemail; if not, then it wasn’t that important.
If you get a lot of calls from unknown callers (i.e. this phone is how they contact you for your services), then this function is not for you.
To turn on the Silence Unknown Callers function
• From Home Screen press the Settings button
• Scroll down and select Phone
• Scroll down and select Silence Unknown Callers
• Slide the switch to the right. The switch will turn green when it is ON.
