iPhone - Calculator
Overview:
Most iPhone users are aware of the Calculator app that comes with the phone, but few are aware of its unique functions such as Quick Calculator, Scientific Calculator, or the Swipe to Backspace. What follows are instructions on how to utilize these functions of the iPhone Calculator app.
How to use the iPhone Quick Calculator
• When you need to perform a quick simple calculation and don’t want to open the Calculator app.
• From the Home screen, swipe from left to right to display the screen that is on the left side of the home screen. This is called the Today View.
• At the top of the Today View is a Search box. Press this Search box to activate it and display the keyboard.
• Enter the calculation using the numbers and symbols on the keyboard. The answer will instantly appear below your search. Use the +, -, x, and / characters to add, subtract, multiply, and divide the numbers entered.
• Example: Enter in the Search box 225x2.75 to see how quickly you get the answer and no Calculator app to close.
How to activate iPhone’s Scientific Calculator
• From the Home Screens, press the Calculator icon to open the Calculator app. The Calculator app can also be launched from the Control Center.
• With the Calculator app opened, turn the phone sideways (landscape view). The Scientific Calculator with all its buttons will appear.
How to Swipe to Backspace on iPhone’s Calculator
• When entering a list of numbers in calculator (such as a running sum), you entered the last number wrongly, and want to correct it without losing all the numbers you have already entered. Most calculators have a CE (Clear Entry) button that clears only the last number entered. The iPhone Calculator does not have this button and only has an AC (All Clear) which clears all numbers entered.
• The iPhone’s solution for correcting a number entered wrong without losing the current total is the swipe to backspace. Place your finger on or above the wrong number and swipe to the right or left (works in both directions). This will remove the wrong number one digit per swipe. You don’t have to remove the entire number for one digit being wrong as only one digit of the number is removed by each swipe, but if you desire to remove the entire number you must remove it one digit at a time (i.e. multiple swipes).
Hopefully these functions will make the iPhone Calculator be more useful for you.
