iPhone – “.” Shortcut
Overview:
One of the biggest inconveniences in using a smartphone keyboard is having to jump to a different page of the keyboard for punctuation, numbers, or special characters; and another page for math and other special symbols. This really comes into play a lot when finishing a sentence and starting the next sentence. Since this full stop (ending a sentence with a period, advancing a space, and starting the first word of the next sentence as a capital letter) is a function that is performed quite often, the iPhone has added a shortcut to perform this function. Thus, as you type a message and come to the end of a sentence; press the shortcut. The period , space, and ready to capitalize the next letter entered occurs and you continue to type without having to change keyboard pages or case. This save times and fingers. Instructions on activating and using the “.” Shortcut (called the full stop shortcut) follows.
Activation of “.” Shortcut
The “.” Shortcut is usually activated by default, but it is best to check to make sure it is turned on before you try to use it.
• From the home screens select Settings.
• Scroll down and select General.
• Scroll down the General Settings and select Keyboard.
• Scroll down the Keyboards Settings to “.” Shortcut. The slide switch to the right should be green. If not, slide the switch to the right to turn this shortcut on.
• Side Tip: You can get to this Keyboards Settings page quickly from the keyboard. Press and hold the smiley face or globe icon to the left of the microphone icon on the keyboard. A list of in use keyboards (usually English and Emoji) and Keyboard Settings. Selecting Keyboard Settings will take you directly to that page.
Using the “.” Shortcut (Full stop)
When you come to the end of a sentence, before you add a space after the last word of that sentence, double tap the spacebar on the keyboard. The double tap has to be done quickly so the phone knows it is a quick double tap. This quick double tap on the spacebar of the keyboard is the shortcut to place a period at that point, followed by a space, and leave the letter keyboard ready to capitalize the next letter entered.
BTW: For those following grammar rules: It is acceptable to use one or two spaces between sentences.
