iPhone – Text Replacement
Overview:
Using a smartphone involves a lot of “typing”, although entering characters on a smartphone keyboard is not “typing”, it’s tapping. I always look for ways to decrease the amount of typing and especially when using tiny keyboards. One feature of Microsoft Word that made it my number one text editor is Auto Correct which saves a lot of typing and time by allowing me to create shortcuts of a few letters long that are replaced with the full text of something I usually have to type many times. The iPhone has a similar function called Text Replacement, which can greatly decrease the amount you type. Text Replacement works like Auto Correct by replacing a shortcut “word” you created with the full text you would usually type. Example: You type “I’m leaving now” many times in many different messages. You enter iln as the shortcut for I’m leaving now in Text Replacement. When you type iln followed by a space in a message, it will be replaced by I’m leaving now. Thus, you can create a lot of phrases that you often type in messages with Text Replacement shortcuts. One shortcut that has saved me a lot of typing is my contact information…I type a small shortcut word and get all my contact info placed in the message. Using Text Replacement can save you a vast amount of typing and time, and setting it up is real easy. What follows are instructions on how to use the Text Replacement feature of the iPhone.
How to Enter a Phrase and Shortcut in Text Replacement
• From the home screens select the Settings icon.
• Scroll down the Settings page and select General.
• Scroll down the General Settings page and select Keyboard.
• On the Keyboard Settings page select Text Replacement.
• This is the Text Replacement page.
• Press the add icon (+) in the upper right corner to add a text replacement.
• In the Phrase space, type the full text of your phrase as you want it to appear in the message.
• Enter a shortcut “word” you create in Shortcut space. This shortcut “word” is what you will type in the message to cause the phrase to be placed there. It should be something easy to remember and easy to type. I like using the first letter of words in the Phrase to become the shortcut, easier to remember.
• Once you have the Phrase and Shortcut entered, press the Save icon to add this to Text Replacement.
How To Use Text Replacement
• The Text Replacements are attached to the Keyboard and are available in any app on the phone that uses the phone’s keyboard.
• In a message, type the shortcut you created for the phrase followed by a space. The shortcut will be replaced by the phrase.
• To see how it works, try this example: Go to Text Replacement settings and type in the Phrase space I have to go now. Talk to you later. Bye! and enter igo for the shortcut. Now go start a text message and enter igo followed by a space and you’ll see the igo replaced by the phrase. Notice the shortcut I created for the phrase about having to end the message, i go for I got to go message will be easy to remember.
• You can add emojis to the Phrase too.
