iPhone – Password Protected Photo
Overview:
Like a password protected document, you can use the Notes app on your iPhone to password protect a photo. I know that the first thought that comes to mind for password protecting a photo is hiding a risqué photo, but consider the following situation.
You have a list of login IDs and passwords in a document on your PC and want a copy of that list on your phone in case you need to login when away from the PC. You also want to give that list extra security by password protecting it. One solution is to type all the login IDs and password directly into a Notes document on your phone (See: iPhone – Password Protected Documents for how to do that). Another solution is to display the document on the PC and take a screen capture of the open document. Save this screen capture as a photo file (such as a .jpg format). Transfer this photo file to the phone and have the Notes app on the phone password protect it. Delete all copies except the password protected one. All data desired is viewable in the photo which is password protected, and you didn’t have to type all that data into a Notes document.
What follows are instructions on how to use the Notes app to password protect (lock) a photo. These instructions are intended for users that have read iPhone – Password Protected Documents and have an understanding of the Notes app use of one password for all documents and photos.
How to Password Protect a Photo on the iPhone
• On the iPhone’s home screen select Photos and select the photo you wish to password protect so it is displayed on the screen.
• Press the Share icon (a box with an up arrow on it) in the lower left corner of the screen.
• This causes a list of: contacts that you have shared photos with, apps that are setup for sharing, and various other options you can perform on the photo. Scroll thru the line of apps and select the Notes app.
• Notes app will open to save the photo as an attachment to a new note. In the Save To: box you can choose to save the photo to another document, photo, or folder by pressing the arrow to the right of the box. Tip: You can’t save the photo to another document or photo that has the lock applied to it. The box on the lower part of the screen states Add text to your note. Press in this box to “add text to your note”, but really use this space to type a title to display in Notes for this photo. A title for the photo will look a lot better in the listings than “New Note”. Once you finish adding text (giving the photo a title), press Save in the upper right corner. You have now saved a copy of this photo in the Notes app. The screen will return to the displayed photo.
• Exit the Photos app and return to the home screens.
• Select and open the Notes app. You will see the photo by the name you gave it or is in the document or photo file you placed it in. Open this file in Notes.
• With the file open, press the Settings icon (three horizontal dots in a circle) in the upper right corner of the screen.
• From the list of options select Lock. For the lock screen that opens use your fingerprint for the Touch ID or select Enter Password and enter the password you have for Notes lock function.
• Now the photo is password protected, but we need to get rid of the copies that are not password protected.
• From the home screens select and open the Photos app and display the photo that you password protected. Press the Delete icon (trashcan) in the lower right corner of the screen and confirm by pressing Delete photo.
• Like a PC, deleting an item doesn’t really delete it. Return to the main page of the Photos app (where it shows the Albums). Scroll down the page to the Utilities and select Recently Deleted. Here you will find the photo that you just deleted. Tap the photo to open it and select Delete in the lower left corner and then confirm the delete by pressing the Delete Photo button.
• Now the photo in Photos has been deleted and the only way to view that photo is to unlock the Notes copy of that photo and it requires your fingerprint or your password.
Additional Information about Notes Locked Documents and Photos
• Notes will lock documents and photos, but will not lock videos, emails, or PDFs.
• A photo cannot be added to a Note file that has the lock applied, even if the lock is open. You can remove the lock function from that file, add the photo, and then add the lock function again.
