iPhone Magnifier
Overview:
You’re at a restaurant and you can’t read the menu because you left your reading glasses at home and if you did have your glasses, the restaurant is so dark or the printing on the menu is so small you couldn’t read it anyway. You collect coins and you think the coin you have been looking for was just given you in change, but you can’t read the fine print of the coin even with your glasses to know for sure. Your about to sign some important papers, but the fine print is too fine for you to see clearly. All these situations and many other similar situations can be solved with a magnifying glass and a light source. Many people already have a magnifying glass or a lighted magnifying glass at home, but that magnifying glass isn’t going to help them in situations away from home.
The iPhone comes with a super magnifying glass with many additional features including a light source and calls the utility Magnifier. The instructions below, explain how to turn on the Magnifier, the controls and how to use them, and how to use the freeze and multi-image functions.
iPhone Magnifier
How to turn Magnifier ON
• From the iPhone home screen select Settings
• From the Settings page scroll down and select Accessibility
• On the Accessibility page select Magnifier
• On the Magnifier page slide the button to the right to turn the Magnifier on (the button background will turn green, indicating that it’s ON)
• When the Magnifier is ON an icon will appear on one of your home screens. The icon for the Magnifier is a magnifying glass with a plus sign in the glass. It will also be labeled Magnifier.
• Press the Magnifier icon to open the Magnifier
iPhone Magnifier Controls
There are 3 tiers of controls for the Magnifier that appear at the bottom of the Magnifier screen. In the center of the top tier there is an arrow. Pressing this arrow with your finger and sliding up the screen will expose the 2nd and 3rd tiers of controls, and sliding down will hide the controls and increase the image viewing area. The image viewing area above these controls is a live image thru the phone’s camera. The Magnifier won’t work if the camera lens is covered.
1st tier of controls – Zoom control – Increase/decrease the amount of magnification or the size of the image.
Place your finger on the orange dot and slide the dot along the line. All the way left, next to the – sign, is no magnification. The amount of magnification increases as you slide the dot toward the + sign. Use carefully as this can increase the magnification so much that the text on a document 1 foot away will be enlarged so much that only one word at a time will be visible on the screen.
2nd tier of controls – Picture controls – These controls adjust the image of the object as it appears on the screen by controlling brightness, contrast, colored filters, and external lighting for the object. There are 4 icons on this tier.
From left to right:
The sun (solid filled circle surrounded by dots) icon is for brightness of the image (note that this brightness is adjusting how much light enters the camera lens and not how much light is on the subject). Press the icon to display the adjustment bar. Place your finger on the orange circle and slide the circle on the adjustment line. Move the dot toward the – sign to darken the image and move the dot toward the + sign to brighten the image. Press the sun icon to close the adjustment bar and saving the adjustment you made.
The circle icon that is half black and half white is the contrast control. Press the icon to display the adjustment bar. Place your finger on the orange circle and slide the circle on the adjustment line. Move the dot toward the – sign to decrease contrast and move the dot toward the + sign to increase contrast. Press the icon to close the adjustment bar and saving the adjustment you made. Often changing the contrast can sharpen an image.
The interlaced three yellow circles symbol is the icon for filter control. Press the icon to display the filter choices. The choices will be thumbnails of the image, each demonstrating what the image would look like if that filter were selected. Filters change the color of items in the image. Changing the color can change the appearance of items that which aids in identification of items. For example: if you have trouble reading black text on white paper, use the invert filter to read white text on a black background. Press the filter icon after making your selection to close this control.
The last icon on this tier is a flashlight icon and that is exactly what it is. Quickly press and release the flashlight icon to turn the flashlight on and off. Press and hold the flashlight icon will cause the flashlight light intensity control bar to appear. Place your finger on the orange circle and slide the circle on the adjustment line. Move the dot toward the – sign to decrease the light’s intensity and move the dot toward the + sign to increase the light’s intensity. Press the flashlight icon to close the adjustment bar and saving the adjustment you made.
3rd tier of controls – Freeze controls and Settings – The freeze controls allows you freeze (take a temporary picture) the screen or several screens in succession. The zoom, brightness, contrast, and filter controls can be applied to the frozen screen(s). This helps a lot. A magnified object also has magnified movements so the slightest moving is amplified in the image view. It is hard to read a magnified text if the text is moving all over the screen. Freeze the screen, set the phone down and then read the text…you can use the controls to adjust the image so you can read it. The Settings for Magnifier are to customize how the controls appear on the three tiers.
From left to right:
The gear icon is for the Settings of Magnifier. You can use the Settings pages to change how the controls appear on the tiers. Example: you can move the flashlight icon to share the 1st tier with the Zoom control. Press the done button when you finish customizing the way the controls appear.
The small circle within a large circle icon is the Freeze control. Pressing this icon freezes the image on the screen and the small circle is replaced with an X in the large circle. Pressing the X, deletes the frozen image and goes back to live view. The X is returned to a small circle inside the larger circle. Thus, you can freeze, delete, and freeze again to get the image you want.
The two overlapping rectangles icon (suppose to represent multiple pictures) is the Multi-view icon. This function allows you to take several freeze images in a row and then you can select the best one to view. Press the Multi-view icon and the icon will change with a count of how many views have been taken. Also the small circle in the freeze control icon has changed to a + sign. Press and release the + of the freeze control to freeze a view. The screen will still display the live image and each time you press the + an image will be frozen and saved. When finished freezing screens, press the Multi-view icon to view the screens that were frozen. Pressing an image will display it on the screen above. You can still use the Zoom and other picture controls on this frozen image. When finished will all the images, press the X to the right of the images returns to the Multi-view screen. You can add more images or press End at the top left of the screen. Ending the Multi-view screen deletes all images previously frozen.
Press the home screen button to exit the Magnifier. As with any iPhone app, you have to use the double-tap slide up technique to truly turn off an app (more on this in a later post) and this includes Magnifier.
