Interested in how to back up emails in Thunderbird. Was using Moz Backup, but it recently returned an error message and the program owner has not responded to queries.

Hi joel,
Thunderbird is easy to back up since all mail and user settings are kept in a single folder for each user. This is called the profile folder. Thunderbird names this folder with random digit follow by the profile name you selected. If you did not select a profile name then the profile name will be default. The profile folder name will be like this: XXXXXXXX.default where the X's represent a string of 8 random letters and numbers and the "default" is the profile name. If you have only had one users and thus only 1 profile folder, there will be only one profile folder. In order to see the profile folders, Explorer (or File Explorer in Windows 10) must be set to show hidden files.
OK. To Back up Thunderbird you will need:
Explorer set to show hidden files. The name of the Thunderbird profile folder you wish to backup (XXXXXXXX.default). A place to place the backup copy.
Let me know if you need help with any of the above condition.
Backing up Thunderbird 1) Make sure Thunderbird is closed before trying to back it up. 2) Press Win key + R to open the Run box 2) Type in %APPDATA%\Thunderbird\Profiles\ and press Enter key. This will open the folder that contains the profile folder(s). 3) Right click the profile folder you want to back up and select Copy. 4) Paste the back up where you want to store the backup.
Any problems or questions let me know.

One of the programs the Neat Net Tricks Review Panel reported on some time ago (in June 2010 I believe) is SyncBack from 2BrightSparks Software. In keeping with the "shareware" concept, I do pay for the program, especially as I have used it for years to backup the work that I do for my clients. However, there is a free version. It is excellent, and is updated at the same time as the Standard and Pro versions. And it remains free. You can find it at www.2brightsparks.com/freeware/index.html. You can set it up to backup whatever files and folders you wish, ad do so automatically. You can "send" them to various folders, drives, disks and so on. By creating your "profile(s)" you can be sure to have up-to-date versions of your email, photos, documents or whatever other kinds of files that you want to be sure not to lose. Because there is always that inevitable crash or drive failure, which so often loses forever those precious files that you took so much time and care to create. Great question! And, as usual, such excellent information from Dr Card.
