For months, my internet connection has been humming along on Verizon LTE 4G at decent speeds and using about 0.4 MB per day. The problem: suddenly last month and so far this month I have seen usage increase to nearly 1 GB per day. Considering that a data boost with Verizon is $35/GB, I would like to determine the source of this sudden increased usage. All this while only browsing news sites and dealing with email - no streaming of any kind. Only light browsing periodically during the day along with the email traffic, mainly from newsletter subscriptions
Thus my interest in and messaging within, drcard's current thread about "Find Out Who Your PC Is Talking To." Can anyone suggest software or a technique that could help me identify the source of excess data usage? I am hoping the PowerShell scan, once I can get it to work, might give me some insight into unneeded traffic and, perhaps, some correlation to the usage issue.
I have been monitoring overall usaqe by app with the data usage screen in Windows 10 but that is not specific enough. I have been using Glasswire which monitors in real time and shows usage by process but it is difficult to link that info with apps/software, etc. in order to cancel anything to significantly reduce the usage. Task manager doesn't fill the need either. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi lotm, Although a little geeky, Microsoft has a free program that will do what you want. It is called TCPView and can be downloaded from the following link: TCPViewThe problems you are having with netstat and your sudden increase in bandwidth usage points to a malware infection and your system turned into a bot. BTW: To post an image with your post. The image must be a file saved on your PC that is jpg and small in size. The icons at the top and right side of the posting window is what you want. Hold the mouse pointer over each icon to get the description of what that icon does. The one that looks like a small picture will say Insert Image. This will open a box to allow you to Browze your PC to that image file and upload it.

Hello drcard, Thank you for your info on this thread. I just found your message this morning --= I'm still trying to figure out the navigation on this forum. Also, after creating this thread ( I thought) I couldn't find it - it doesn't appear among the main listing of threads for the Internet board.. But your last note to me on that board board led me here. Thank you. I'll try TCPview. FWIW, the Panda scan didn't happen because the installation needed proxy info which is way over my head at this point.

FWIW, I moved the thread to the smart phone topic. More appropriate there I thought. Sorry to confuse you.

Thanks for your thoughtful note. Your move makes pure sense. Since I am cursed with a hotspot for my only internet access I was thinking more to Internet than the "phone" characteristics of the hotspot.
On another topic, I was immeasurably cheered when I saw notice of your creation of NNT Remembered, because from about 2002 to 2008 I was traveling the USA full-time in a motorhome with a Motosat dish on top for my internet access. The NNT newsletter was a Godsend for me for the computer issues associated with my means of internet access- always relevant, always useful and most importantly always accurate - I was so pleased to see you were once again blessing us with your insights and experience. If all that seems too gushing.... well, that's how I intended it. Thank you again for the forum. I apologize that this has become TMI..

Your kind words appreciated. Admittedly, I provide very little advice on this forum and depend on those participants who have far greater expertise. About the only thing I can take credit for is holding the forum together (mundane maintenance) and my occasional 2 cents worth. But nice to hear from a beneficiary, and thanks much!
