Just installed the latest update, Fall Creators Update, and though a lengthy process, appears OK with one question I have. Seems the dictation feature (Windows key + H and then click on microphone) has a lot of potential in email but it only allows dictation of a few words and then shuts off. Is there a way to retain the mike function for the entire desired dictation?

Hi Jack, The way that dictation works is total dictation. If you make any kind of mouse, touch pad, or keyboard entry (such as edit a word you dictated) it will turn the dictation off and has to be turned on again with WinKey + H. There are dictation edit key words you can use. The Microsoft link below lists the verbal commands for the dictation module. Use dictation to talk instead of type on your PC

I still can only dictate 5 words or so before the mike function ceases and I have to reenter the function with Winkey + H. Doesn't seem to be a useful feature. And I'm not otherwise using the mouse or keyboard during dictation.

Hi Jack: The Windows Secrets e-magazine published an article "How to dictate your text and commands in Windows" today. This link will get you started on their article: tinyurl.com/y9yxplno , although if you are not a subscriber, you won't be able to read more than the first few paragraphs I scanned through the article, as I don't think that the Fall Creators Update has installed itself yet on my laptop. I expect that I will go back to this issue of the magazine and pay more attention to the details when the Fall Creators Update makes an appearance. Like the Nuance "Dragon Naturally Speaking" program, it needs to be trained to recognize your voice so that it interprets what you want to write correctly. After spending quite a few hours doing the Dragon training, I gradually lost interest, and went back to my error-prone typing.

Hi Peter,
To see if you have the Fall Creators upgrade/update:
Press Win Key + R (to open Run box) Type in winver and press the Enter key The About Windows box will open Next to Version will be a number If the number is 1703 or higher, then you have the Fall Creators upgrade loaded.
The Fall Creators upgrade added a lot of neat things that I'm still testing out. One big addition is the Power User Menu (To access - Win Key + X). Command Prompt has been changed to Windows PowerShell. PowerShell adds some new awesome commands that were not available with Command Prompt. These won't be used by most users now, but in the future many desired customization will be thru the PowerShell. PowerShell commands will replace DLLs. This will mean that the PowerShell "Command prompt" will be able to control other applications in addition to Windows itself.

But I still wish it would take more than 5 words of dictation; but, alas, maybe in one of the future -- and many -- updates.

Hi Jack,
Sorry, my search could not find any others users reporting the problem you are having. I tested my dictation feature and it works great. In fact, the line that you are reading now is one that I dictated using that dictate function. I did notice that if you stop talking for more than 5 seconds it turns itself off. I might start using this more often at this board, it will make posting a lot easier on my poor old fingers.
