Since moving to windows 10 my computer takes quite a few minutes to shut down after selecting power off. Is this common?

Could be taking excessive time to close applications you have running. You might look at what these are and close those not needed in Task Manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL). Select (highlight) those and End Process.

Hello flyfisher and welcome to the forum: Jack is entirely right, and using the KISS principle, the Task Manager will probably do exactly what you require it to do. If you need more information though, there is a program from "sysinternals" called Process Explorer which is somewhat like Task Manager on steroids. You will find it here -- it is free and from MS (sort of): technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/processexplorer.aspxI do use it sometimes, when the Tsk Manager doesn't quite do what I need when I try to shut things down, or when I need to see that a difficult program really has been "killed". You will find a very good tutorial from Leo Notenboom about this program for people who like to look around a bit. It is at: ask-leo.com/process_explorer_a_free_powerful_replacement_for_windows_task_manager.html
