I was asked why birth dates are required in the registration process. One user felt this was an invasion of privacy. I put the question to ProBoard's support and they replied:
In regards to the age, unfortunately this is a requirement that won't be removed as it not only assists with verifying the age of members, but also helps with some forum specific features that many members often enjoy such as the forum calendar. We are aware that this isn't for everyone, however, so it is worth noting that after the account is created you can modify your profile so that your date of birth is hidden. This will prevent other forum members from being able to see your date of birth or age, as well as hides the info from the forum calendar.

So why not just ask for our birth year? Not nearly as intrusive of our privacy.

So why not just ask for our birth year? Not nearly as intrusive of our privacy. It's rather a moot point anyway, since they don't require a birth certificate so you could put whatever birth date you wished. But some forums have the birth dates tied to the forum calendar so we could all send you a box of chocolates on your birthday. Sorry, no chocolates.
