Automatically Permanently Delete Spam Emails in Outlook
Note: This applies to all versions of Outlook.
What
Adjust the settings of the Spam (Junk E-mail) folder to permanently delete all emails in that folder that are 1 day old or older.
Why
Even thou your mail provider and Outlook do a good job of screening incoming emails to detect spam emails and send them to the Spam (Junk E-mail) folder, you still have to deal with these unwanted emails in order to delete them and keep your Spam folder clean. Cleaning the Spam folder regularly leaves less emails to synchronize this folder and easier to review for emails that should not have been labeled as Spam (Junk). To set this routine deletion of spam from the Spam (Junk E-mail) folder on an automatic basis truly gets rid of spam without you having to deal with it at all.
How
Note: The folder that holds spam is labeled Spam for an IMAP account and Junk E-mail for a POP3 account. The instructions are the same for both type accounts and only differ in the name of the folder that spam emails are placed in.
o Open Outlook
o In the left Navigation pane right click the Spam folder for your account and select Properties which will open the Spam folder Properties window as shown in the image below.
o Select the AutoArchive tab.
o Select Archive this folder using these settings:
o In the box next to Clean out items older than: decrease the number to 1. Click the dropdown arrow in the time period box to the right and select Days.
o Select Permanently delete old items
o Click Apply and then click OK.
Outlook will now delete all emails in the Spam folder that are 1 day or older.
Comments
If you have more than one account in Outlook, these settings will have to be placed in the Properties of each Spam/Junk E-mail folder of each account.
