Determine Boot Mode for Windows
What Command that that shows if the Windows PC boots from UEFI or BIOS.
Why Windows 11 requires the UEFI boot mode and any upgrade from Windows 10 will require the boot mode changed from BIOS to UEFI if the Windows 10 boot mode is BIOS. A Windows 10 user wanting to upgrade needs to verify the boot mode the PC has and this command is a quick way to find out.
How
Step 1 – Open Administrator Command Prompt Open an Administrator Command Prompt by opening a Run box (WinKey + R), type in cmd, press the Ctrl + Shift + Enter keys at the same time, click Yes to the UAC box.
Step 2 – Enter the Command At the prompt (>) enter the following command and press the Enter key:
bcdedit
The system will respond with Windows Boot Manager and Boot Loader information. Look for the value for “path” in the Boot Loader group. If the path ends with winload.efi the boot mode is UEFI. If the path ends with winload.exe the boot mode is BIOS.
Close the Command Prompt window when finished.
