Make Resizing Windows Easier
What
Change the default width setting of the invisible border around an open window making it easier to grab with the mouse pointer to resize the window.
Why
Placing the mouse pointer at the exact position (corner of the invisible border) on a corner of an open window to get the double headed diagonal arrow for you to click, hold, and move to resize the window requires precision mouse pointer placement. Often the user has to slow down or try several times before the user can “grab” the corner to resize the window. Increasing the width of the invisible border that surrounds the window gives more area for the mouse pointer to make contact with and thus easier to “grab”.
How
Note: Before making any changes, test to see how your setup works now so you will really notice the difference after you make the changes. Open a blank Notepad document such that all 4 corners of the document window shows on the desktop. Slowly move the mouse pointer from outside the document window toward a corner of the document. Note how close the mouse pointer has to be to the window before the pointer turns into a double headed arrow, which is mouse pointer contact with the invisible border. After making the change, repeat the same test and see the difference it makes.
Step 1
The setting that sets the width (thickness) of the border around an open window (which is invisible and will not display on the screen) is kept in the following Registry key.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics
in the BorderWidth setting. The default setting is -12. Changing to -160 makes grabbing a lot easier. If you manually change the BorderWidth setting, be sure to backup that key first. A reboot is required for the change to occur.
OR
Open a blank Notepad document. Copy and paste the following without any extra lines or spaces and paste in the Notepad document with no lines above or spaces to the left.
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics]
"BorderWidth"="-160"
Select File >Save as to open the Save as window. Choose a location to save to. Click the dropdown arrow next to Save as type: and select All Files. Enter BorderWidthPatch.reg (must include the .reg as part of the name) as the File name: and press the Save button.
Go to the BorderWidthPatch.reg you saved, right click and select Merge. A UAC window will open for the Registry Editor to open – click Yes. Windows will post a warning about editing the Registry which you answer to continue and finally will display a message that the edit has been added. A reboot is required for the changes to occur.
Comments
This change will not affect Microsoft Office applications as their borders are controlled by the application.
