Is “Unclaimed Property – You may have money” a scam?
No and Yes
No, in the fact that you may have unclaimed property (money). Yes, if you pay someone to find it for you (locator’s fee) since that information is publicly available and easy for you to find out for yourself.
Unclaimed Property is a legal term for money (not real estate or physical objects) that a bank, insurance company, state government agencies, and other businesses have in an account that has been inactive for a long period of time (the length of time differs by state). State (and sometimes cities) laws require the unclaimed funds be turned over to the state Controller to keep until it can be claimed by the owner or heirs. Each state has a web site that allows anyone to search for unclaimed properties.
Before you think you are going to get money, you have to have money due to you that you don’t know about. Yes, do the search; but know that only about 10% of those that search find unclaimed property they can claim.
To Do This Search: Open your Internet Search app (I use DuckDuckGo) and search for: Unclaimed Property in YourState (enter your State) Select your state’s web site and follow the links (if needed) to the search page. Enter your information and view the results. Often there is a link to claim the property if you do find one.
Please, don’t pay someone to do this search for you.
