Windows 11 Coming Soon
Overview:
On October 5, 2021 Microsoft will release Windows 11 and between then and the spring of 2022 Microsoft will offer it as a free upgrade to Windows 10. Below are a few points I obtained from numerous reviews.
Considerations for upgrade to Windows 11
• If you have a fully licensed and updated Windows 10 (version 2004 or higher), you can update to Windows for free if you update before the end of spring 2022.
• Your motherboard must support UEFI, be Secure Boot capable, and has TPM with version 2.0 or higher. Current hard drive must be GPT format. Windows 11 will not use the MBR or BIOS.
• The drive will be NTFS with GPT format. You will most likely have to convert your drive from MBR to GPT which can take some time for larger drives. The switch to UEFI and GPT allows the security to utilize the hardware security, which is known to stop all forms of software attacks. Most motherboards manufactured since 2018 will meet these requirements. Check this link of acceptable processors for Windows 11 to see if your processor is listed.
Windows 11 Processor Compatibility List
• Display requires ≥ 9” diagonal size and 8 bits color.
• Windows 11 will be offered as a 64 bit app only, but will support installed 32 bit apps.
• Support for Windows 10 will continue until October, 2025.
Opinion:
Windows 11 appears to offer better security, faster boots, and faster performance by switching to totally UEFI and GPT. Other than a few new utilities and new Start menu it comes across as a fully patched Windows 10.
