Make Sure the Path is Correct
Overview:
Many tips and fixes require the user to enter the Path (location) of a file which are really directions to where that file is kept. Paths have to be 100% correct or what you are trying to do will not happen. Paths can get very long and confusing, so it is easy to make a mistake when entering the Path manually. The following tip is how to get Windows 10 to copy the Path to a file and paste that Path where you need it. Windows will keep the Path 100% correct.
How To Copy the Path to a File/Folder
Note: This is for Windows 10 • Open File Explorer and go to the file or folder you want the Path for. • Highlight the file or folder by holding the mouse pointer over the file/folder name. Do not click the file to open it, just highlight it. • On the Home tab above click Copy path. • You can paste the path directly into a Command Prompt with Ctrl + V or you can paste it into a document for use later. • This method will add quote marks to the Path which is needed when the Path address has any spaces in any of the folder names are entered into commands.
Side Tip:
If you just want to view the Path without copying it: In File Explorer, right click the header column (the one with Name, Date modified, etc.) and select More. Scroll down the list and place a check mark next to Path. The Path of files and folders will be displayed in File Explorer (no quotes and not for copying).
