This tip is for older users (like me) that have too many miles on our mouse hand.
Selecting Files with a Tired Mouse
Applies To: All versions of Windows since XP.
Overview:
Most users are familiar with the technique of selecting several files from a list of files using the Ctrl key, the mouse button, and the mouse pointer so you can copy, move, paste, or delete those files in a single action. Likewise, many users have experienced slight actions of the mouse (twitches from tired hands) that result in an action you did not want, or files not being selected correctly. Sometimes even dropping the files in the wrong folder. Holding down that mouse button down and moving the mouse pointer at the same time is not the most difficult task there is, but it’s not the easiest with a tired mouse hand. Fortunately for us with a tired, twitchy mouse hand there is another easier way to accomplish this task without using that mouse button, which means not having to hold the mouse button down for the entire procedure….here’s how.
Selecting Several Files Without a Mouse Click
1️⃣ Select the topmost file you want by holding the mouse pointer over the file until it highlights with a background color (usually blue).
2️⃣ Press and hold down the Ctrl key and it must be held down until you are finished selecting files from the list.
3️⃣ Use the down arrow to move down the list. As you move down the list you will see the current file selected will be outlined in the same color as the highlight color only it will not have the background color. You can also use the up arrow to move up the list.
4️⃣ Press the space bar while the file is outlined to select it. Once selected, the file have the highlight of the background color (like the first file you selected). Pressing the space bar again will unselect the file.
5️⃣ Once you have selected all the files you want, release the Ctrl key.
6️⃣ Take action on the selected files:
Delete - If you want to delete the selected files, press the Delete (Del) key.
Copy/Paste – If you want to copy the selected files: Press Ctrl + C – Navigate to the folder to
place the copies – Press Ctrl + V to Paste.
Move – If you want to move the selected files: Press Ctrl + X – Navigate to the folder to move the files to – Press
Ctrl + V to Paste.
