Run Commands for Windows
Applies to: Windows versions 7, 8, & 10.
Overview:
Below is a list of run commands that work for all Windows systems since Windows 7.
{Insert silent pause here}
How can a list of run commands be useful? Glad you asked.
π All the utility applications of Windows can be started with Run commands.
π For some of those utility applications a Run command is the only way to start them.
π Entering a Run command is the fastest way to open any of the utility applications.
β Some Run commands control Windows functions such as shutdown.
π In automating tasks with bat or script files, a Run command is the only way to open these utilities or control Windows.
How to use the Run commands:
Single Use
You use that command to open that utility very rarely.
Method 1 β Run Box
ο Open the Run box (WinKey + R).
ο Enter the Run command you desire and press the Enter key.
ο The application or settings page will open.
Method 2 β Command Prompt
ο Open a command window
ο At the prompt enter the run command you desire and press the Enter key.
ο The application or settings page will open.
Multiple Use
You use that command to open that utility on a regular basis.
Method 1 - Shortcut
ο Right click a blank area of your Desktop and select New>Shortcut to open the shortcut wizard.
ο In the box under Type the location of the item: type or paste the Run command for the application you want to open. Click the Next button.
ο Name the shortcut the name of the application that it opens.
ο Every time you click that shortcut it will be the same as entering the Run command in the Run box.
Note: The shortcut can be moved to different folders and will still work. An example of such a shortcut would be one with the Run command write, which creates a shortcut to WordPad.
Method 2 β Bat file
ο Open Notepad and enter the Run command on the first line.
ο Select File>Save as to open the save box.
ο Choose a location to save the file. Click in the Save as type: box and select All Files (*.*).
ο In the File name box enter the name for the file and add the extension .bat and press the Save button.
ο Each time this bat file is opened, it will execute the run command and open the application or settings page for that run command.
Note: A .bat file is much like a shortcut, but, the .bat file can be automated while a shortcut canβt. Also a .bat file can have multiple run commands while a shortcut can have only one.
π₯Noticeπ₯: Not all these commands will run on your setup and not all run commands are on this list. Different versions of Windows have additional utilities installed that your version doesnβt have. Windows will display a message that it could not find the file connected to your run command. This means that utility is not installed on your version. Also note that some commands have a space in the command, the space is part of the command.
