I use Adblock Plus to stop popups and site spawned links to new tabs and windows, however it doesn't catch everything and sometimes causes some sites to not load at all. Some sites check to see if you have Adblock and the polite ones ask you to turn it off others won't load up at all. There is a setting in About:config that tells Firefox in what instances (events) to allow popups (this includes site spawned links). If you remove all the events that are allowed to create popups then Firefox will stop all popups and site spawned links. It will however tell you that it has done so and will give you the opportunity to allow them for the current site. In windows it is a yellow bar that notifies you and you just click on to allow the popups. In Android a notification drop down will occur. I still use Adblock Plus but for those sites that do not load at all because of it, I turn it off for the site (Adblock plus can be site specific) and Firefox will stop the popups. I've had this setup for a few weeks now and it works like a charm.
To do this:
Type About:config in the address bar. Firefox will warn you to be careful. You should be ok.
Search for dom.popup_allowed_events (dom.pop will do).
Double click then delete the space delimited list of events and enter the word none.
Then click OK.
Note: It is always a good idea to copy to a file the values of any changes you do in about:config so that you can restore them if you need to. If you forget you can search the setting name 'dom.popup_allowed_events' in google to find the default events list.
Close the tab or exit Firefox.
