I have a Dell E6400 laptop. I put a CD into the drawer that opens on the right side. When I closed it, it felt a little tight. Now the computer does not recognize that a CD is in that drive. And I can't get it to eject. I tried using the button on the side of the laptop and tried the "Eject" command under that drive. Neither work.
I need advice, please. Thank you. Laverne

Hi laverne,
Nearly all CD/DVD drives have a small hole on the door (usually near the eject button). Take a normal size paper clip and bend it straight. Push the paperclip into the hole. This is the manual override to unlock the tray and the tray should open slightly. This allows you to use your fingers to pull the tray totally open. If the CD is jammed, you may have to push the CD downward while opening the tray to prevent the CD from catching the edge of the housing and prevent it from opening totally.

Thanks, Dana. I tried using the hole with a paperclip but the drawer didn't budge. When I press on the physical eject button the light flickers for a second and then nothing.
I read somewhere on the Internet (and then lost it) about inserting a thin cardboard covered with double-sided tape. This worked for someone. Have you ever heard of such an idea? If so, could you give me more details.
As a final alternative, I guess a technician can take apart the laptop and remove the jammed CD. Is this possible, even when the drawer won't open? Or do I have to live without a drive? I can get along with only the USB ports, I guess.

Dana, I was able to get the jammed CD out of my laptop. Here is what I did…
I unplugged the laptop and shook it and tried the paperclip in the hole – no result. I turned the laptop upside down and laid it on the kitchen table so I could see that little hole better. Then I hooked a dental scraping tool with a hook into the tiny space on the side of the drawer and pushed in the paperclip while pulling lightly on the dental tool. It opened immediately!
Thanks for your help. Maybe this solution will help someone else, if they happen to have a dental tool available.
