I went out of town for 2.5 months and suspended my home ISP. When I returned and attempted to reinstate service, I was advised that I had forfeited "promotional discounts" ( I knew of none) and my cost would increase from $64 to $77. I asked for my level to change from their 50 MBps to their Essential service @ 30 MBps which would lower my cost a bit. I was told this could not be done unless I leased a DOCSIS 2.0 modem from them or buy one (more money of course) and I find this hard to swallow: a faster modem is required for slower speed, but the one I have is OK if I keep my faster -- and more expensive -- service.

ISP is Cox. Unfortunately, they have little competition in my area, just one other cable provider and they are just as bad or worse. I have seriously thought of giving up the Internet except on smart phone, but like so many others I have become far too enamored with technology.

OMG, internet and email on phone only? No way. That would be horrible. You're stuck with a stinker, Jack!

To follow up, I bit the bullet and bought a DOCSIS 3.0 modem which at times even surpasses the promised 50 MB speed. When I asked to go to essential (promised 30 MBPS but likely much less) they cautioned me that if it was too slow and I didn't like it, I would be unable to return to my present speed and would have to "upgrade" at a higher cost, $88/month for 100 MBPS. Said I am "grandfathered" at my current tier. Just waiting for a better option, differnt company.
