While the screen says I have no internet connection, when I click on the Wi-Fi icon it says "identifying" then says I am connected. I have a HP Pavilion g4, Win 7. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi boyce,
A WiFi connection with no internet means the PC connects to the Router but the router isn't getting an Internet connection. Is there any other PC that connects to this router and does it connect to the Internet? Right click your connection icon and open Network and Sharing Center. Are there any red Xs on any of the connection lines in the graphic display? Click the Internet icon and relate what the screen displays.

There is a red X on the first connection line. When I click on the internet icon, Google opens.

Hi boyce,
Clicking the Internet icon and getting Google means that the router is connected to the Internet. Even if it says your WiFi is connected, the red X means the connection does not connect to the network. This may be your connection settings on your PC or the settings in the router will not allow a connection. Right click that connection icon again and select Troubleshoot problems. This is a wizard that will tell where the problem is and if it can fix it, it will. Run the Troubleshoot problems and report back what you find. Be specific of the what happens as this will tell where the problem lies.

Hi boyce,
I'm sorry, I used the wrong term. I meant to right click your connection icon in the task bar. The same one you clicked to get the Network and Sharing Center. You should also see in that right click menu Troubleshoot problems above the Network and Sharing Center. If not, then in the Network and Sharing Center window you will see under Change your network settings - Troubleshoot problems....this is the same troubleshoot wizard listed in the connection icon right click menu.
The trouble shooter will test your connection and the results it returns will be that it fixed the connection or why not. If the troubleshooter doesn't fix the problem, then what is says will tell where the problem is. If after all this and we still can't figure out what is stopping the connection, then there is still another way to fix it. We can delete the connection and all the settings, and set it up new. It could be many different things causing the problem and a lot depends on how your system is setup. Does your Internet connection come into your home to a router? Are there other PCs or devices in your home that use this router connection and can they connect to the Internet? These answers will help me nail down where the problem exists.

Sorry for the delay. Had to wait for the internet to (maybe) come back on which takes from about 2 - 16 hours ad it stays on for about 10 min. - 3 or 4 hours. Usually the internet comes on and goes off during the night when I am asleep. Right clicked the connection icon and after the troubleshooter reset the wireless network adapter and investigated router issues, it said that the "wireless network connection" does not have a valid IP configuration, which it could not fix but earlier it could not find any issues. When there is no internet connection the connection icon looks like a broadcast symbol sitting on a small triangle with an exclamation point in the middle. This changes every now and then to a small bulls-eye which does not last too long. Mostly the broadcast symbol with the triangle is on.

Hi boyce,
What type of connection do you have to your ISP? Do you go thru a router? The icon changing means that it "sees" a connection but can't connect because of the IP configuration, which means the settings you used when you first set this up have changed OR what your router or ISP has changed the settings they allow.
Your statement "wireless network connection". I need to know if you are trying to connect to a wireless router for this device? If a router, are other devices connecting to it and getting to the Internet? Your statements about down time with no Internet could be an ISP problem or a router problem. The instructions of what to do depend on if it is a router problem or a wireless connection to the router problem.
If it is the wireless connection to the router, then disable the current connection and set up a new connection. If you can't set up a new connection, let me know and let me know where it fails. There can be different things in play, but if another device in your household (like a smart phone) can connect wireless to this router this would rule out the router as the problem.

Hi boyce,
Glad it was fixed and glad it was Windows 7. Windows remembers passwords for wireless connection. Windows 7 allows a user to change the password, but Windows 8 and up require you to delete the entire network setup in order to change the password. Note for the future: Even if it is "Internet Ready" you will still have to set up the connection with the correct access and password. "Cable guy" means cable Internet and router. Make sure you have the password and the name of the connection so you can wireless connect other devices you may get.
