Hello...back when Windows 10 was free I tried to download it on a HP laptop. Couldn't. It read: SMART hard disc check has detected an imminent failure. Can I return to Windows 7 or is it the garbage.

Hi boyce,
Yes, it means that total failure could happen soon. You need to transfer all the data you want saved to another drive. Decision now is do you want to replace the drive to continue using the laptop. This is not difficult, but you must consider the whole process. How much would the new drive cost? Do you have recovery disks or an backup image of the current HD? How old is this laptop (age doesn't mean worn out but rather is the hardware outdated)? Will the drive work well enough to perform the transfer to the new drive?
The important thing is to get any vital data off the laptop before the drive fails. It could last a few more weeks or die the next time you turn it on.
HP has good support and videos for replacing their drives and sell replacement hard drives. Look at your options and the answers to the above questions to help you decide if to replace the drive or use the money for a new laptop with current software and hardware.

Thank you. Considering everything, I think I will throw it away.
