I had a lot of trouble trying to download Internet Explorer 11 but because I was being harassed to do it I finally contacted the Microsoft Help Chat and after 12+ hours of troubleshooting they finally downloaded and installed it only to have it NOT work. It just flashes for a second and then nothing. I've been using Google Chrome to get online but would like to go back to IE because I'm familiar with it. Among some of the troubleshooting tried included scans, check disk, checking for malware, running Fix it, restoring IE to the defaults, and trying to uninstall and go back to IE 10. Nothing has worked. After another two hours yesterday, I was advised to pay $150 for some advanced troubleshooting which I might consider except I have lost all faith that they would be able to fix.
I'm running Windows Home Premium 64b on a Gateway NV57H50u laptop. All updates have been installed.
I can't believe I'm the only one that has had this problem, but I can't find any resolutions when I search for answers so if anyone out there could offer some help I would be eternally grateful.
Thanks in advance.
Judy

Hi Judy: It seems as if you are not the only person to have problems with this browser. I do not know if this link will help, but you could look through it to see if any suggestions there would be helpful: windowssecrets.com/forums/showthread.php/159156-IE-won-t-launchBTW: You say that you are running Win Home Premium, but is it 7, Vista, 8x or 10? Good luck. Peter

Peter, Thanks for the quick reply it's Windows 7. I'll check out the link and be very happy if I can find something to try that I haven't already tried.

So I followed the link you sent and did the sfc/ scannow which resulted in the following message: Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log for example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log I had no idea how to process so I typed that string after the prompt and got the message: Access was denied. So that's a dead end for me unless you can tell me how to access and interpret the CBS logs.
So then more fun happens when I reboot the computer and click on the Internet Explorer icon and it actually launched EXCEPT for the fact that it was IE 9!!! So I go to Window update and there's two optional downloads one is IE 10 so I download and install it but nothing happens to change IE from 9 to 10 and when I open IE it's still IE 9.
When I check the programs in the Control Panel there's no version of IE listed there's only something called Internet Explorer DEP. When I check the part where you can Turn windows features on or off, IE 11 is still listed and I can't turn it off. When I uncheck the box next to IE 11 I get an error message that the action could not be completed.
When I check for Updates, IE 10 is still listed as being optional even though I've downloaded and installed it twice it's still there to be downloaded. It says it was successfully downloaded and installed so I don't know what's happening to prevent it from updating.
I can't believe how much time I've wasted on this problem. I suppose I should be happy to have IE 9 to use but now I'll be hounded again about my browser being out of date whenever I use it.
Just thought I'd let you know what happened. At least I can use Internet Explorer again. If you or anyone else reading this have any thoughts about how I might proceed. I'd be very grateful. Thanks. Judy

And the hits just keep on hitting... It seems the version of IE9 that I am STUCK with won't open any links when you are using it. I looked it up and it's a known problem or at least it was. I tried several of the troubleshooting tips including resetting IE properties AGAIN but nothing worked.
This has become beyond frustrating...

Hi Judy:
Boy, you are patient! I just checked my version of IE, (which I use only rarely!) and found that it is version 11. Once upon a time, I had evidently told it to update itself automatically: Options GearWheel thingy, About IE, and there is a box about automatic updates which I had checked off.
It is probably far too simplistic a possibility, but instead of going through the Windows Update, could you let IE try to update itself?

I've had Win7 since forever and for the longest time could not even update to IE10. Then Redmond did something (update?) that let Win7 support IE10. Then a short while ago they said we could now have IE11 and I was able to successfully fetch and use it. Can't say I like it much but it helps to use it when dealing with Microsoft. I mainly use Firefox or Pale Moon as they snoop less than Chrome which is easier. I suspect you have your machine on automatic updates, so you will soon look up and see Windows telling you that it is in the process of installing Windows 10, which will make Edge your default browser and install IE11 as your backup - if your machine has the specs to handle it and if it installs without trouble. If you do not want the new version, Windows 10, go to www.ultimateoutsider.com, read and understand what you're being told, and download (free) GSX Control Panel, after which you will not get 10 until you ask for it. Hope this helps.

I have re-set my Windows updates to download but ask before installing or something like that. Most recently I was scammed into paying a virus remover company to get rid of a virus and they also tried to download IE 10 and IE 11 but ended up saying I'd have to reinstall Windows in order to get either updated Browser. Meanwhile I'm getting used to Chrome although I don't like it as much.

Hi Judy,
This is a common problem with Windows 7 and IE 11 and has to do with problems in IE 9 and Microsoft's upgrade requirements that the upgrade version of IE (in this case IE 9) has to have all the security updates installed before it will upgrade to a newer version. If the prior version has an incomplete security update installed the upgrade to IE 11 will mess up. The problem is the mess up occurs in different places and different ways in each situation. This is why there are so many fixes that work for some and don't work for others. Pure luck that your mess up will be corrected by using a posted solution or fix.
This happened to many of the PCs where I work. The solution we found that worked only worked for some machines and had to reload those PC where it didn't work. The solution is to remove all upgrades of IE on that PC to revert the PC to the IE that was loaded when the Windows 7 was installed. This is IE 8. Once the PC is using IE 8 do two complete cold boots so all temp files and left overs will be deleted. Once back to IE 8, then upgrade to IE 11; by-passing IE 9 and IE 10. On those PCs where this didn't work, it was because the PC would not revert back to IE 8.
Maybe with your PC you'll be lucky and can revert to IE 8. If so, IE 8 upgrades to IE 11 with no problems.
