I am leaving the board. Two reason, I look in once every two months I get all the new stuff,as there is very little posting of any kind.Number two.Signing in is a pain in the A...s, password captcha username too much.the government doesn't use this much security.Anyway it was fun for a while thanks everyone. Marc.

Sorry you're having a problem with the CAPTCHA and password. As far as I know, this is just an added precaution ProBoards puts on initial registration. At least, I know I have never been prompted for a CAPTCHA since my first log in to the forum.
As for the lack of traffic, I can only surmise that everyone is experiencing no problem with their computer, or have decided that it might be nice to spend a summer away from the keyboard. Either rationale is rather nice.
Good luck to you!

Hi Marc,
I had several thoughts after reading your post. First, I check the Forum about four or five times a day. I just go to the site and do not sign in; in other words, I am looking at the Forum as a guest. This gives me access to all of the categories and postings with the exception of those under "Registered Members Only" (Computing Rants and Raves, Freeware Finds, Tips & Tweaks).
I check the Forum for several reasons. One is to read about what others are having problems with. But another reason is to answer any questions where I have some knowledge, in order to give back something. (Of course, posting an answer does require logging in.) I have learned SO VERY MUCH from the other members of this forum over the years -- and have had innumerable problems solved for me by the very capable help there. I always say I learned about 90% of what I know from reading forums and particularly the NNT Forum. It is wonderful to know that this expert help is available to me.
As far as looking at the Registered Members Only posts, I keep an eye on the number of posts and when I see that new ones have been added, I then sign in and read those. I have never had to use a CAPCHA to log in -- just my username and password.
Along with Jack, I wish you the best.

Sorry to see you leave but it seems that only looking at the board every couple of moths you had already left. I am a little puzzled by the formal "good-bye" as I am with your complaint regarding a captcha since no one but you have seemingly ever had to do this except during the initial registration process. Nonetheless, sorry that we did not satisfy your needs.

Sorry, Marck, you will be missed. And mea culpa for neglecting the board; I just find myself with too little time. (At my age you spend a lot more dozing). But I do try to get by when I can and participate as I can. I do value the service and hope I can make more use of it. I allow my browser to remember names and passwords. (That screaming in the background is my security guru, tearing out his hair). So the only time I have to contend with a captcha is once when I register. That said, remember the original of this board got abandoned when it was inundated under the load of spam. I am having the same problem with my own board. Even a captcha isn't blocking the spambots. Too many captchas are easy for the bots to read and impossible for users. They area real PITA. If you know of one that really works please tell me - I am barely keeping my head above water on my own site. Go if you must, only you can judge that. But you will be missed.

Hi Marck,
I don't know whether you're still reading this forum, but in case you are I thought I'd let you know that I too have enjoyed and benefitted from your presence here, and I was sorry to read that you're planning to leave. And I too am mystified by why you're constantly being presented with that damned captcha mechanism. Normally, when I come to the forum, I'm greeted by "Welcome cyberdiva." I probably told the forum to remember my login credentials. It didn't (and still doesn't) seem like a dangerous thing to do, since I don't use the same password on any other site. If you reconsider your decision to leave, you might want to think about letting the site remember your login info.

For what it's worth...I do as cyberdiva does and am welcomed each time with a 'welcome thai'. I check in at least twice a day and if I had to do all that captcha stuff, I certainly wouldn't be here near that often.

Hmm.. I guess the Captcha stuff was removed for just logging in. Registering was a bit of a chore but that was it.

Those who were on the old NNT Forum may remember we had to close it and go to ProBoards because bots had taken the old one over. As I recall, some half million or so bots had forced their registration onto the board and apparently could seize registrants' email address and other info for spam purposes. The ProBoards forum does indeed have a more complex registration process but it's a small price to pay for the protection. We even screen each new member before accepting their registration, to verify that they are a real person rather than a bot.

Hi Marc,
Before you withdraw your support, consider these thoughts:
I am one of the old NNT Forum posters, and what Jack said was mild to what happened at the old forum. I gladly endure the extra steps it takes to keep the forum alive. Even if you get tired of the extra security steps, rather than quit why not try a solution to lessen the security hassle. It's just another problem that members of this board solve all the time.
Warning! The rest of this post is MY opinion and how I feel.
This group of people come together to help each other. In doing so, many more are helped that don't participate as a member of the board. There are very few places on the web that someone can find free, honest, accurate, and individual help. Many places that offer help are riddled with numerous ways to make some money off the process of providing help. As a contributor to this forum, I offer my help freely and do not want someone making a profit off it. I fully realize that there are costs to a place on the web where this helping can occur. I think ProBoards is an excellent solution. The advertisements are kept to a less intrusive level, which indicates that ProBoards is running less expensive ad space and not trying to get rich off other people's kindness.
That being said, I would like to make appeal to readers of this that have not reistered with the board. This board exists because ProBoards sells ad space to merchants. The merchants are spending the money expecting the ad to increase sells, so it is important to them that to get as many people as possible to view their ad. This concept drives the market for Internet ads. It comes down to the fact that the value of ad space depends upon the number of visits (hits) a web site has AND how intrusive the ad can be. If this board doesn't get enough registered members and hits, then ProBoards will not be able to get enough ad space renevue to pay for the board. This would cause the loss of a place where people can go to get real, no strings attached help for free. My request is simple: If you have gotten help from any of the posts on this board, do the right thing and say thank you by registering. Click an ad every now and then even if you have no interest. Ad clicks go a long way in increasing the value of the ad space. Tell your friends of this board (and they will thank you for telling them.
