This one bundled with foistware but did not give an option to decline. Proceeded to download and install McAfee Security Scan Plus without permission and I had to use WinPatrol to disable as a startup, then install the latest version of Revo Pro to remove McAfee. Still in process and don't know if I will be successful on first attempt, just a messy process.

I have no objection toward them (or others) offering crapware, but in this case I wasn't even given the option to accept or decline before it was forced on me. |

The popup makes me suspicious. I never get a popup. I don't think I get pop-ups as reminders either, though I'm not 100% sure. Usually, though, I update when someone tells me that there's an update, or I read somewhere "official" (e.g., Windows Secrets Newsletter) that there's an update. |

Jack, one more thought. Are you sure you didn't just not notice the McAfee business? Adobe always puts in some kind of crapware offer, and you have to be sure to uncheck the pre-checked box before proceeding. I just went to Adobe to download the newest version, and I saw the McAfee Security Scan "option," which I was quick to uncheck, but it's easy to miss it if you're not looking for it. On the other hand, the point Mark made about not usually finding out via a pop-up is still a concern, especially if you weren't offered the possibility of unchecking the box.

Re the pop-up box: IIRC somewhere in the pages Adobe sends along with each new update I have always encountered a page that urges me to change my options to automatically update, which of course I refuse. I also usually see an option to the effect of notify but don't download (or install). I think there is an option to refuse notification of updates too though I'm not sure who might want it. Checkingthis option structure might explain most events in this thread.

Weird. I never see this. I always get my Flash Player updates here: www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/distribution3.htmlSpeaking of which, 18.0.0.194 is now out. I get the plugin version for Firefox and the ActiveX one for IE. I have it set to never check for updates (the only piece of software I have that does is virus definitions for MSE. |

I echo Dr Mark's welcome, MarkRH. I have all updates from all programs, including Windows, to notify me and never to install automatically. My usually trusting habits are hard to overcome though, and I always have to remind myself to check carefully whatever it is that I am downloading and/or installing. A useful little utility that I came to know via NNT (I think it was DrMark who pointed it out) is Unchecky, which helps to uncheck some of the bundled foistware that often comes bundled with other programs. You can find it at unchecky.com/I also use Revo Uninstaller to install programs. It keeps good track of the installation process, and does an excellent cleanup when uninstalling. |
