There is a complaint in the current issue of NNT about the lack of any ISP competition in a city (Sierra Vista?) in Arizona. I googled +sierra Vista. +ISPs, and was given a list of five plus others ostensibly in the region. There were also ads for ISP lists. Maybe there's hope.
I first started surfing using Netscape under Windows 3.1 on a 386-16 Everex desktop. The machine is long gone, but I still have the original ISP and email address. Service makes a difference.

There are other ISP but they are satellite or DSL, not cable, and would require upfront charges and higher monthly fees that make the change quite a bit less attractive. And, from what I hear of others' experience, support is sadly lacking with them as well.

I forgot you might have a cable modem, and I gather your setup is like the Canadian ones - cable companies get local monopolies, so if you want what they offer you're stuck with the one you've got. I started with a landline but my ISP offered DSL when it became available. He charges $35/month for 2 mbps unlimited and $45/month for 6 mbps unlimited. This is competitive with anything our local cable monopoly offers, but the ISP renders superb service.
