CDocuments and SettingsJoel HornsteinMy Doc....doc (97.5 KB)I'm running Windows XP with outlook express 6. I download emails from the ATT server and store them on my hard drive. If I'm in my inbox and click on the find tab to locate emails from someone named Bob, it will find perhaps 2-3 from a year ago with "An unknown error occurred" message, even though I might have 50 or more emails from Bob in my inbox. This does not happen if I search my sent items box. I thought the size of my inbox might be too large, so I deleted all emails except for the last 2 yrs, but the problem persisted. I have run programs like Glary utilities, but no luck. Any suggestions/solutions would be greatly appreciated. Joel Hornstein jobby@att.net

Hi Joel,
The error is an indication that your Inbox has become corrupted. I'm not surprised since you seem to keep all your emails in the Inbox. Even when you have fixed the Inbox, it will become corrupt again simply because you keep your emails in it. I bet that you have noticed that it takes longer and longer for OE to open and download your emails.
OE stores your emails in files with a .dbx extension using the name of the folder such as Inbox.dbx. You can create folders in OE to move emails from your Inbox to these created folders. Each folder will have its own dbx file (using the folder's name) to store the emails in. With your emails stored in different folders each dbx file will be smaller. The size of a dbx file is directly related to corruption...the larger the file, the more likely it is to become corrupted.
Solution for your immediate problem is two fold.
1) Move all emails from the Inbox to another folder (in your case folders). 2) Once the Inbox is empty close OE. Find the Inbox.dbx file on your PC (must have search option to show hidden and system files) or the settings in OE can show you the storage folder location that holds all these dbx files is located. Delete the empty Inbox.dbx file. OE will create a new Inbox.dbx file when it is opened the next time, which will not be corrupted.
Long ago I wrote a detailed article about setting up folders in OE to move your emails from the Inbox to these folders and thus, keep the Inbox clean. Sadly, when I searched for it I could not find it in my current storage. I must have placed it in my long term storage and will take time to find. If you decide to clean out your Inbox I am more than willing to help you as long as my memory of OE still works. The process is very simple once you learn the basic steps.
