As usual and as I have tried to point out before in the BB as well as in the pages of NNT, it serves you well to not just automatically download everything Microsoft throws your way, but instead read first to see if you actually need (or want) the update. An perfect example is contained in this week's 14 updates. One 7.9MB update listed as KB2970228 is simply to install the sign for the new Russian ruble on your computer. Now maybe some of you do a lot of writing or trading with Russia and need the mark for the new ruble, but for most of us I think we would rather keep the 7.9MB on our hard drive. I would also encourage everyone to wait a day or two before installing any updates to see if problems develop with any particular update/patch (as usually happens) as they get installed by millions of users.

That is one stupid important update. Then again you never know once the embargo on Russia is over or when the Russian hackers contact you you may need to pay them off.

I certainly agree that it's not wise to simply accept all updates as soon as they're offered. I tend to wait until Susan Bradley, who writes the Patch Watch column for the Windows Secrets newsletter, has tried them out and has given her opinion. The newsletter comes out every Thursday. I've found it quite useful, and not just for Patch Watch.
