Hi blueboxer, I totally agree that one must exercise extreme caution when downloading anything from the Internet. At the time I posted that link (way back when), Internet Explorer had that flaw. And I wanted a stand-alone download of the Chrome browser which could be taken to others' computers for install. Fortunately, that is all in the past now. I have no idea at this time where the link came from. I only remember it was not easy to find a full module download file for Chrome. Most downloads were installers. I don't know how many people follow the practice of checking downloaded files at the VirusTotal site. I check EVERY file I download. This is the site in case anyone is interested. It also checks URLs. www.virustotal.com/

It also checks URLs. www.virustotal.com/I've certainly used the VirusTotal site, but I never thought about using it for most downloads. Interesting idea. However, so far I've been satisfied with scanning each download with my anti-virus software and, if I'm a bit more nervous, with Malwarebytes as well. It's quite convenient, since all I have to do is right-click on the filename and choose Scan with.... But thanks for the suggestion about VirusTotal. I'll keep it in mind for downloads I consider especially dodgy.

Also, if the link looks suspicious, you can get a Firefox add-on named the Dr. Web Anti-Virus Link Checker. I haven't checked to see if its available for others. It adds a "Check with Dr. Web" option to your right-click menu. You just right-click on the link, click on the option, and you get a "scanning" box which shows all the path the link leads to (and through), andf a verdict of clean or otherwise. Quite neat. Like any anti-virus it doubtless can be led astray but it hasn't let me down yet and has told me a great deal about who's behind certain links and indirectly how trustworthy they might be.

I didn't know about the Dr. Web Anti-Virus Link Checker. I suspect that the Pro version of Malwarebytes does something similar without my having to ask it to check. It is always on the lookout for untrustworthy web sites, and the protection it offers is both for contact from and to the site. It will block contact it sees as potentially dangerous, but the user is always able to override the blocking.

Another good one is Jotti's malware scan.
