I have a Dell OptiPlex 780 Desktop Win7 computer and have been using the wired keyboard that came with the computer. I bought a wireless KB (MS Wireless Desktop 3000) and plugged it in while the wired one was still in a USB port. Then I removed the wired one. The wireless one would not type.
I plugged the wired one back in and now that one won't type either. I tried several different USB ports. HELP! I can't live without a keyboard! In looking at Device Manager it says HID keyboard device, This device is working properly.
Thanks. Laverne

Update: 10 minutes later. I rebooted and the wired keyboard is now working.
Any advice on getting the wireless to work. Should I disconnect the wired kb before plugging in the USB piece for the wireless keyboard?

Hi laverne,
The keyboard is recognized at the begining of the boot process as the BIOS loads. Thus, in order for your system to "see" a new keyboard is to have the keyboard attached before booting up.
You didn't say what kind of wireless, but most work the same way. First turn off the PC and remove the old wired keyboard...Some set ups get real confused if it detects two keyboards hen booting up. Most wireless keyboards come with a small plastic chip that has a USB connection. That is the wireless receiver that feeds the signal from the keyboard into the PC. Most time you can plug that chip into the USB port, make sure the batteries are in the keyboard, some have on/off switches so be sure to turn it on, and boot up the PC. The keyboard should be seen and work. Most advanced functions of the keyboard will only work when Windows has booted up, but the basic functions will still work in BIOS. Most wireless keyboards work with Windows default settings, but some brands come with software that has to be installed for the special functions to work.

I followed your instructions, step by step, and everything is working just great. It's hard to believe I can mess up a simple thing like a plug-and-play wireless keyboard. I guess it was the two keyboards both plugged in that caused all the confusion. As always, many thanks.
