I just bought a Dell OptiPlex 780DT. It is narrow and I have it in the standup position. This puts the CD drive in the vertical position. Question: How do I insert a CD into the drive? There is nothing to hold it when I insert it. Must I lay the computer down to use this drive? HELP...

Hi laverne,
I have to use PCs set up like that at work. The method I use is to place the CD in the circular recession that is in the open tray and while holding one finger on the CD to hold in place push the tray slightly inward. This slight push to close the tray triggers the same switch as pushing the tray button. The tray will start to retrack. As soon as the edge of the CD in the tray starts to enter the housing, let go of the finger holding the CD in the tray. There is a compression guide inside the housing that will push the CD into the tray recession and this compression guide will hold the CD in place while the tray finishes closing. It is this compression guide that allows these CD readers/writers to operate in the vertical position.

I tried your method, Dana, and it actually worked. Of course, I used a blank disk ;-)
I laid the computer on its side to install MS Office from a disk, prior to having your advice. That's such a hassle!
Thanks very much once again for your expert advice.
