Running Windows XP SP3. This morning when I booted my desktop computer, I noticed a brand new icon on my Desktop. I tried researching this -- and can find no information. Do I have a virus? Any help would be appreciated. Here is a picture of the properties of this new icon, named MSCTF.SendReceive.Event.AAC.IC
I can't seem to post the graphic of the Properties of the icon -- so here is the information I see:
Name: MSCTF.SendReceive.Event.AAC.IC Type of file: IC File Opens with: Unknown application Location: C:\Documents and Settings\myusername\Desktop Size: 0 bytes Size on Disk: 0 bytes Created: November 01, 2013 5:52:46 Modified November 01, 2013 5:52:46 Accessed: November 02,2013 8:33:12 AM Attributes (Read Only) (Hidden)-- nothing checked

Before you do anything run a full scan with Malwarebytes,or superantispyware. On my pc I have several MSCTF files that are all legitemate, dont start taking out files until your sure.

Hi Mark and Marck, Thanks for your comments. I haven't installed anything since October 13. The only thing I did in the last day or two is to configure MS Outlook 2007, which I've had for ages but never used. I don't think this is related to the problem. I did run "full scans" using MS Security Essentials, Malwarebytes, and Superantispyware. A few minor things showed up -- but nothing related to the MSCTF.SendReceive.Event.AAC.IC icon which suddenly appeared on my Desktop. I tried the site Mark sent and got an error when I tried to run a scan. I even tried two browsers, IE8 and Chrome. Same result. So, I haven't resolved why the icon showed up on my desktop. I'm still thinking about what to do next. Laverne Attachments:

Laverne,
Are you getting signs of a virus or malware such as computer slowdown, pop-ups, etc.? Is there anything unidentified running in your processes (Task Manager), or anything you don't recognize as being installed as a program? Have you tried to delete the desktop icon? Have you tried to do a search on your computer for this file?

If you click on the icon dose it tell you no files found ? if so you can just delete it.If not look it up in add or remove,if its in there you can uninstall.

As far as I can tell, there are no signs of a virus on my computer. No slow downs and no popups. Everything seems to work just fine. I have looked at the Task Manager list and everything looks normal. I have searched the computer for various files mentioned and find none of them. There are a few files with MSCTF in the file name, like a dll file, but all the dates are from 2008 creation.
When I click on the icon, I get the message that "Windows cannot open this file. Windows needs to know what program created it. etc…" I also have not deleted the icon -- I am leaving it on Desktop as a reminder that something may be awry.
There is nothing in the Add/Remove Programs list which looks like the MSCTF name.

I have reread your first post, here is what it said. Size: 0 bytes <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< 0 bytes Size on Disk: 0 bytes <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< 0 bytes This means there's nothing there, just an icon, I would say you can just delete the said icon

Since it alludes to an Event, is there any hope Even Viewer might yield a clue?

Hi Blueboxer -- I did look at Event Viewer -- but there was nothing that happened at the time of the file's creation -- nothing in the Application list nor the System list. The saga continues…The Desktop icon appeared on 11-01-13 and was named MSCTF.SendReceive.Event.AAC.IC. Another appeared on my Desktop with a slightly different name on 11-05-13, namely, MSCTF.SendReceive.Event.EAC.IC. I still can't get any antivirus to detect anything. Laverne Attachments:

laverne,
As i said previously, everything I can find online about this points to it being a trojan. It has been flagged by Comodo as well as Sandboxie. The bottom line nothing should be placing an icon on your desktop legitimately. Period.

Mark, Can you suggest how I may find this trojan? I did run the Comodo AV online scan which installs as an Add-On to my IE browser. No luck there. Laverne
