Recently I am being bombarded by Yahoo (where I have my email) about updating my browser (Firefox) to be able to take advantage of all that is available to me.
I am currently running FF 12 and am sure I should be doing something about that....but what I am wondering, is what I can expect to happen if I do update? Surely this won't go smoothly and I have so much on my system that I can't even bear to think of anything going awry. Yes, I have everything backed up but will it shut my system down (as I have heard can happen)?
Thanks for any insight anyone has to offer.

Thai,
I used Firefox for several years and never had a problem updating. I might not have always liked the new version as well as a previous one, but the updating always went smoothly. Just make sure you update from your Firefox browser and not some third party.

Since your so far back,it may be safer if you download the new firefox 25.Uninstall firefox 12 and then install firefox 25

The only problem is that I believe if he uninstalls his current Firefox first, he will lose all settings, bookmarks, etc, as they will not be able to be transferred to the new version.

It should give you the option of keeping your settings.

Maybe I am confused here. Wouldn't he have to have his current version still installed for the newer version to be able to transfer those settings? I took your earlier post to suggest that he uninstall his current version before installing the newest version and in that cased he would lose his/her settings, bookmarks, etc.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled and never lost my settings or bookmarks. It should ask you if you want to save your settings.

Marck, I stand corrected. According to Mozilla you are correct.

So when I go to uninstall...before that actually happens....Mozilla will ask me if I want to save stuff.....I , in theory say yes to save....uninstall....install version 25....and voila...all is well?

When you go to control panel add or remove and you click on uninstall,a panel will pop up asking you if you want to save your settings (leave blank) download the new version.(DONE)

Good news.....did the uninstall, left the settings popup unchecked, installed version 25 and so far, so good! All my bookmarks and settings are in tact. Can't say I see a whole lot of difference in going from 12 to 25 BUT at least Yahoo is not bombarding me to upgrade....lol.

You may not notice a lot of difference, but it's probably a lot more secure.

Not to be a bearer of bad news, but Firefox 25 will disable at least one add-on that I'd like to hang on to for awhile: Dashlane, an up and coming password manager.

As a followup to my previous post indicating that Firefox 25 is not compatible with Dashlane password manager: Interestingly, Firefox has disabled all other passport managers I have recently used: Password Manager XP and AI Roboform, as well as Skype Click to Call. Since I have had very good results with Dashlane, I didn't want to upgrade to FF 25 and lose that utility, so I have worked with Dashlane's support and found a fix which may be of interest if you, too, find Dashlane to be of value:
First, make sure you are using the latest version of Dashlane (mine is 2.2.5.48404). If upgrade is needed, open Dashlane and go to Tools>Check for Updates.
If all is well there, reinstall browser extension through the Extensions menu by closing Firefox, and in Dashlane go to Extensions>Uninstall Firefox Extension. Launch Firefox. Close Firefox. Inn Dashlane, go to Extensions>Install Firefox Extension. Launch Firefox.
You should now be able to upgrade Firefox to V 25 and retain Dashlane as an extension.
