I use a router firewall, and a software firewall. My question is,beside my thinking it helps, does a software firewall help in anyway when using a router ? I know it's an added security ? but is it worth the extra wear and tear?

Hi marck,
Personally, I think that the software firewall is needed more than the router (hardware) firewall. Why? Hackers take the easiest route, and router firewalls are a lot harder to hack than sneaking a hack through the software firewall (because the user usually helps with the hack by clicking something that he shouldn't have). The real safety needed the majority of the time in today's climate is software firewalls that lock ports and prevent any "phone home" transmissions. Trojans, root kit viruses, etc. that infest your system all have the same task of "phone home" so the hacker can connect and take control of your system remotely. Router firewalls only work against in-bound transmission, while software firewalls work for both in-bound and out-bound transmissions.
The router firewall comes when you use a router and software firewalls provide the protection needed most; so, yes, I think it wise to have and use both. I do.
