I use firefox as my default browser Several weeks ago a installed avant to try it out and it worked great. Then one day it was made default - don't remember how that happened but the trouble started. While it was default it was happy and running, but if I changed fire fox to default browser avant would not open.

HI!
I have use the Avant Browser but use Opera as my default browser and have not had the experience you are having nor can I find any instance of this on the Internet. Is it possible that you have them both still checked as default and this is causing the problem?
If you remove default status from Firefox can you then open the Avant Browser?

as far as having both checked the answer is no If fact the problem occurs when Firefox is checked and avant is not checked When avant does not open it is impossible to find out what happened to it.

I was in the exact same situation as you a few years ago. I finally went with Opera primarily because of its built-in email. I have it collect all of my email from my other email clients so I never have to open a separate email program--it is all just there in my browser. So now I use Opera almost exclusively and have Avant as a sort of back-up browser.
There is a lot written about how fast each browser is, etc, but my experience is that they are all about the same. It really just comes down to personal preference more than anything else. I can say, however, that I hated Chrome simply because it is such a memory hog.
