Today I wanted to put the Opera browser on a new laptop running Windows 7 64-bit. I downloaded a copy from the Opera web site and installed it, but though it is supposedly version 12.15 (as is the one on my desktop computer), it seems totally different. There was no Home button, for example, and even after I added one, there was no way I could find to tell it what I wanted to use as the browser's home page. Indeed, there were very few ways I could set it up. I found no security settings, cookies settings, etc. The only thing it seemed to allow me to do was to go to some cockamamie news portal. Thanks but no thanks! I was about to uninstall the browser, but I decided to consult all the knowledgeable folks here first. Since I supposedly have the same version number on my desktop, why are the two browsers so very different? (Though I usually keep the installation files, I don't seem to have one for the version on my desktop, so I can't simply install that on the laptop.)
I've been using Opera since the days when one had to pay for it. Though it is no longer my primary browser (it lost out to Firefox several years ago), I like Opera a lot and wanted to be able to continue to use it as a strong backup to Firefox. But I simply can't use the version on my laptop. If anyone knows how to restore the normal settings, I'd be most grateful if you'd let me know.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Cyberdiva,
All of the settings are located under Tools|Preferences. I am guessing that the reason it looks different on your laptop (assuming they are both running Windows 7 64 bit) is because each time there is a new version it keeps all of your previous settings and preferences that you had on your desktop from previous versions. This minimalist "Chrome-like" appearance has been around now for several versions.

Mark, you're a lifesaver (again!)! Even with your help, however, I had some trouble. The [expletive deleted] version of Opera on my laptop apparently does not have a Tools menu (though there is one on my desktop computer's Opera). I went through all the toolbars, but none offered me Tools. It turned out that an ugly button with a truncated O icon and the word Opera turns out to be a Menu, and I worked my way through the menu until, near the bottom, I finally came to Settings. Clicking on Settings got me to Preferences. Unlike an earlier Preferences I came upon in my search, this one actually produced the set of options and settings I was looking for, including a way to tell Opera what I wanted to use as the home page. Whew! What are the so-called developers at Opera smoking? Why would ANYONE with a quarter of a brain want the stripped-down, uninformative, exceedingly frustrating version Opera downloaded to my laptop? MANY MANY THANKS! Again.
