Lately, for no apparent reason that I'm aware of, all of my external hard drives randomly disconnect. I have traced this to an ASMedia USB 3.1 eXtensible Host Controller - 1.10 (Microsoft). I have to either uninstall it and then run Check for New Hardware to reinstall it, or reboot. Internal drives are not affected. I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but this has happened most recently during backups of 2 internal and one external drive using Macrium Reflect 8.

Hi risman,
This can be caused by the driver for that Host controller or interaction of a new driver with your security software. Security software will be connected to your USB Host controller drivers as part of the security protection.
Right click the Start Menu and select Device Manager Scroll down and expand the Universal Serial Bus controllers section Right click ASMedia USB 3.1 eXtensible Host Controller - 1.10 (Microsoft) and select Properties. Select the Driver tab Look at the Driver date: Is it recent? Is it old? Click the Driver Details button. In the list of Driver Files, highlight each file listed one at a time and notice the Provider of each file.
Post back what you find. I suspect that driver was recently updated and your security software hasn't updated to adjust to this new driver.

As I suspected, the driver date of 5/8/23 is recent. Did you notice the problem starting about that time or a little after?
For the driver files I was trying to see if the Provider for either of the driver files is from your security software such as Norton or Eset. If the driver from the security software hasn't been updated to match the other driver update can cause this and usually the security software should update its driver as well.
If neither of the driver files is from security software, then the driver could have been corrupted when it updated. To fix a corrupt driver you need to uninstall the current drivers and have Windows install the driver afresh. To do this: Unplug any devices connected to the USB 3.1 ports. Go to that USB Host controller (ASMedia USB 3.1 eXtensible Host Controller - 1.10 (Microsoft)) , right click and select Uninstall. On reboot Windows will detect the ports and install drivers for it, which hopefully will install correctly. If this doesn't fix the problem, then check with the PC maker and see if a new driver is available (because the last one caused problems).
Let us know how it goes.

The problem has been occurring pretty recently, but also occurred sporadically prior to 5/8/23. I've followed your suggestions, but as this has happened seemingly randomly in the past, who knows if/when it will recur. I'll let you know if and when it does. Meanwhile, thanks for your help.
