Hi kickinin,
The point is an anti-virus and Malwarebytes are not enough alone.
IMO: Anti-virus, Malwarebytes, and routine Windows security updates is the minimum security a user should use. Without routine Windows security updates a user needs a security suite that offers different kinds of protection that Windows used to provide. I think users need a security suite even if their Windows version is updating regularly. On the positive side, older versions of Windows need less patching because most if not all the security flaws that version had when it was first released have been patched. To a hacker, finding a new security flaw that has not been patched on Windows 7 is like finding that needle in the haystack (actually, you have a better chance with the needle). Look at the last two years of updates for Windows 7...very small and really very few security fixes....not much needed patching.
That being said, what Laverne is doing by turning the Internet connection off and only turning it on when using it is a good way to decrease her security risks; but, while she is online the risks are still there. Since she doesn't keep financial or password info on these Windows 7 machines, the only value her setup offers to a hacker is being a bot; and you have to have connection all the time to serve as a bot.
