That is the message I am getting whenever I try to print on my Canon MP160. I can get around it by hitting the Start button on the printer itself, but is this doing harm? What is an ink absorber? And how do I empty it?
As always, thanks....Thai

1
Turn the Canon Pixma MP160 off but make sure the printer's power cable is plugged in to a working outlet. 2
Open the front lid of the Canon Pixma MP160 printer. 3
Locate the waste ink pad on the inside of the printer. You will find it in the center section of the internal components, just to the right of the tray that contains the ink cartridges. The waste ink pad is a rounded piece of white foam. Pull on the waste ink pad to remove it from the printer. Be careful, because the pad will most likely have wet ink on it. 4
Insert the new waste ink pad in the same place you removed the old one and then shut the printer lid. 5
Hold down the "Power" and "Stop" buttons at the same time. 6
Release the "Stop" button twice when the "Power" light comes on and then press the "Stop" button twice more. 7
Release both the "Power" and "Stop" buttons to put the printer into service mode. 8
Press the "Stop" button four times to reset the waste ink pad counter.

You can also very easily clean the pads. The two absorber pads are located on the right side of the printer, under the ink cartridges. With the printer on, lift the top to expose the cartridges. They will automatically move out of the way. You can move them to the left side by hand if the printer is not on. You will probably need a flashlight to see the pads. They each sit in a rubber retainer. The pads can be removed very easily and cleaned. Take the pads out of the retainers with tweezers. They clean up nicely with warm water but you can use something like Simple Green if they are stubborn. It is best to use a spray bottle (on stream) and blast it through the pad until it is white. Sometimes just putting it under a running faucet will do the trick. If there is ink in the rubber retainer after taking the pad out, it can be cleaned up with a paper towel. Put the pads back into the retainers and you have successfully cleaned the ink absorbers. Now you may have to reset the error message so you can get back to printing. This, as marck already explained, is how to do it.
* With the printer powered off but connected to a power source, press the Power button while pressing and holding the Stop/ Reset button.
* When the Power is lit, press the Stop/Reset button two times while pressing and holding the Power button.
* When releasing the Power button and the Stop / Reset button (regardless of order), the printer will move into a service mode. (Waiting for menu selection)
* When the on/off lights in green, press the Stop/Reset button the specified number of time(s) according to the function listed in the table below.(Each time the Stop/Reset button is pressed, the LED lights alternately in orange and green, starting with orange.)note: press 4 times for waste ink counter reset.

Followed the instructions(thanks guys) and got the pads out (no easy feat I might add. Cleaned and got one back in no problem. In attempting to place the second one back in it flipped out of my forceps and is now hiding somewhere in the bowels of said printer...nowhere to be found! Thinking I had nothing to lose, I attempted to print and voila, no issues.
Now then...am I hurting said machine by running it without both pads?
Attempted to get rid of the error message and this did not go well either. Not only did it not clear the message but now my printer is telling me that I have a full black ink cartridge when I know that is not the case. Could this be because there is no ink absorber?
So, am hoping someone can drop in with some input....Thai

My only concern would be that the ink that was going into the absorber pad will now be going into your copier. Maybe you could make a replacement pad out of some little piece of sponge or something? Canon will, however, sell you a new ink absorber pad. The number to call, in the United States, is 732-521-7230, which is their New Jersey parts center. They are open Monday straight through Friday, 9:00am to 8:00pm Est and should be able to sell you a replacement.
Not sure why the reset did not work as it is the correct method and does work as I have had to use it on several people's Canon printers from time to time. It sounds as though you reset the ink quantity detector by mistake. Might you have pressed some number other than the required four? I suspect the ink cartridge quantity detector will return to normal the next time you replace your black ink cartridge.
