Valid point about one click or two; however, at MY age every minute counts!

I tried Dana's "easy tip" for clearing the Desktop and the Taskbar from a conglomeration of icons. I'm one of the worst offenders, having had 5 folders and some 85 icons on my desktop. Per his instructions, I put them in a folder called APPS, set it up as a new toolbar and just had too many to show on my screen without scrolling. So I broke them down into folders inside my APPS folder. It was quite easy to do. Anyway, here is the result in case anyone is interested. Attachments:

Marck -- Yes, my Desktop certainly looks better. As for the background, I have many files of magnificent Wallpaper scenes to use on my Desktop. Even with the icons, I used to change the background every couple of months, depending on the season.
Right now, after this change, I am working on getting my brain to work with a "list" of shortcuts as opposed to icon pictures which I could find not only by the picture but by the location on my Desktop. I'm having some withdrawal pains.

Hi laverne,
If you are using Win 7, then is an excellent suggestion for your Desktop and is the reason I want a clean Desktop.
Over the years; I, like many, have accumulated many personal photos of family gatherings, vacations, and other special events and times. I created a single folder and placed copies of all these photos in it (In Win 7 there is no 2GB size limit on a folder). Using Windows Background settings I have turn these photos into a slideshow with a 3 minute interval between photos (long enough for a good look at a photo before moving to the next one). With the large number of photos it takes many days before the photos start to repeat. This gives me a lifetime scrapbook that often helps to remind me of fond memories and forces me to take a slight break from a busy work schedule to think of those things that really matter most to me. In my busy schedule I would never find "time" just to sit and view these memories, but flashing across my Desktop is just the prompt I need.

We seem to have a lot of people enjoying this general discussion of desktop icons but we have gone a bit afar from the original question. That is not particularly important other than there have been some good tips in this thread that may well get lost as others would never find them Could I encourage you to repost some of your tips in the Tips and Tweaks forum so that they do not get lost? Thanks!

Hi all, Here's an easy tip to get Quick launch function for many more programs than the Quick launch bar can handle and get rid of desktop icons to one small place on the taskbar and because of the way it is done provides alphabetical arrangement.... This is one of my favourite tips which I use on all my computers. I have found an additional bit of trickery that this Special Quick Launch Apps folder does. Now that my desktop has only four items on it: Computer, Network, the Recycle Bin and a shortcut to my Data Drive, it has place for more! So I left the Apps folder there just in case it would sometimes be more convenient to use than the Apps Quick Launch on the Taskbar (which is almost never, of course). But when a new Desktop or Start Menu Icon appears that I want to put into the Quick Launch Apps folder on the Taskbar, I drag and drop it into the Apps Icon on the Desktop. Da Dah! The new shortcut appears immediately in the Quick Launch Apps folder. Since my efforts to put things directly in the QL-Apps folder are a bit finicky, this is a plus that I had not expected. Thank you, Dana, for this excellent tweak. Highly recommended!
