That makes no sense to me either, Cyberdiva, unless it means that Firefox is updating the list of search engines from which you can choose. Quite frankly, I have never been presented with that update.
As for Opera, I am still using the most recent build of version 12 and see mo reason to stop--at least at the moment. My main reason for staying with Opera is because I like the integrated email which they removed from Opera 15. From what I am reading, however, many of the changes they made to Opera 15 they may well reverse due to so many customer protests. I know bookmarks and email are being discussed for re-inclusion at some future point. It seems they forgot that while they do not have a huge number of users, the ones they have may be some of the most dedicated. So, I think Opera is in a real state of flux right now so meanwhile I am staying put.

Hi, Dr. Mark. I'm relieved to know that you too are puzzled by the "Automatically update search engines" option. You say you don't think you were ever presented with that option, but I think it has been included for a while, on the same page where you choose how/whether you want FF updated (Tools-->Options-->Advanced-->General). See circled option near bottom of screenshot: Though Firefox is my default browser, I use Opera as my backup, and like you I prefer Opera 12. I've no wish to use Opera 15. I don't care about bookmarks, since I use Linkman (which works with all my browsers), but I have no wish for an even more minimalist approach than was foisted off on me when I installed Opera 12 (and, I might add, Firefox 22). Anyway, in keeping with Marck's suggestion not to check "Automatically update search engines" on Firefox, I've now unchecked that option.

If it's any help to some folks, here's what I've done lately. In Firefox menu bar, I clicked on Tools> Options> Advanced, where I unchecked the box saying update automatically and checked the one saying tell me when an update is available. Shortly after accepting 23 I was offered 24 so I went to the Mozilla Firefox website and read the changelog. It is written in Advanced Geek but what I could (maybe) understand suggested there was new deviltry abroad on the Web and 24 had jazzed up defences so I had better get it. Since I have learned through experiences like Cyberdiva's NEVER to click anywhere near a Firefox push box, I clicked in the menu bar on Help> About Firefox, where an information box offers "check for updates". This takes you directly to the download page for the latest version. Having learned through painful experience of Mozilla's penchant for losing the profile (bookmarks, passwords, settings and such) when updating I went to my rusty copy of Mozbackup, an independent program that saves your current profile on request and has provision for you to use it to restore things after Mozilla screws up. Everything worked fine and I am now running Firefox 24. Whether I will take any future updates will be decided when they are offered.
